"The best CD to come out of Portland in the past couple years" Tom Addis, Host of the Blues Palace

It's wild guitars...
It's huge drums...
It's big fat bass...
It's "STINK BOMB!"
and it's here on CDBABY.COM!!!!

The Strange Tones have delivered a stellar recording filled with vintage guitars, tube amps and contagious energy.
"STINK BOMB!" captures the original primeval beat and feel of blues, rock-a-billy, and surf and yet manages to have an explosive fresh sound! This CD is not a museum exhibit, a cheap imitation or a heated up plate of bad leftovers....

IT'S ALIVE I TELL YOU....ALIVE!

On guitars the Strange Tones feature Guitar Julie and Whit Draper. Raised on a steady diet of Jimmy Reed's blues and Ike and Tina's R&B, Guitar Julie's incendiary solos light up the CD while her soulful vocals leave no doubt that every word she sings has got to be true. Known mostly for his traditional acoustic blues work with the band Back Porch Blues, Whit Draper clearly relishes the electric world of The Strange Tones. From understated blues to surf-a-billy madness his playing always amazes. The big fat groove of The Strange Tones comes from one of the finest rhythm sections working the Northwest. Bass player Andy Strange and drummer J.D. Huge lock in with a driving force that can only come from years of misspent youth playing together in bands. J.D. Huge propels the band with a steady hand, at times with a subtle shuffle, at others swinging like a man possessed. Andy Strange, an alumni of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' band The Chicken Hawks, keeps the band firmly anchored in the roots with the deep throb of a Fender bass. Mr. Strange also spices up the mix with some lowdown harmonica, heartfelt vocals, and even a splash of theramin.

From the gritty blues of the opening song to the other-worldly surf of the final track, this CD captures the band's unique and energetic sound...the sound of Fender amps set up at the crossroads of blues, surf, rock-a-billy, and old-school R&B....the sound of raw meets tight.

Oregon's largest paper (The Oregoninan) says " The Strange Tones are a fine funky band that plays rockin' roots music with the fervor of true believers. Their sound is stripped of gratuitous flash because these guys know Jimmy Reed's secret, that one note is better than a hundred, especially if it's the perfect one." Featured guests on the CD include the legendary Jon Koonce, nationally recognized slide guitar master Henry Cooper, and Hammond B3 heavyweight Mike Walker.

I put the CD in my player, and CDDB (the internet based CD classification system) locates the album and classifies it as "rockabilly". OK - lets see what happens. As CDDB indicated there are some rockabilly flavored tunes, but the Strange Tones defy a single classification. IT'S ALIVE I TELL YOU....ALIVE! Sure enough, the album jars me into a state of submission, falling subservient to it's power. The first tune "Comin' after you" comes on and I'm presented with a blues tinged medium tempo shuffle with tasty rhythm guitar counter lines and Guitar Julies thick vocals threatening to strike down her old love. I like it! A few songs fall easily in the blues. "Comin' after you" which is reminiscent of the old blues standard "help me". The straight on, slow shuffling "Pleased to meet you" and the ultimately fast swinging "Stink Bomb!" are a few examples. Others fall under what my friend called "monster surf". Seems an apt description. "Runaway Dog" could have been on the Repo Man soundtrack. Love it. Over half the songs are well written self penned tunes. Production is simple, but contains a nice depth with occasional overdubs. Whit Draper and Guitar Julie push the envelope with some nice guitar work on tunes like "Comin' after you". In addition to solid bass work, Andy Strange turns in a nice performance on the Theremin in "Stink Bomb!". When was the last time you heard a Theremin on an album? Extras include a few guest musicians: Jon Koonce, slide guitar master Henry Cooper, and Mike Walker. I could be wrong, but I assume it's Koonce who delivers the cool pickin solo in Whole Lotta Nothin'. Nice additions to add occasional spice on a few cuts. I received the "limited deluxe edition" which included a deluxe matchbook cover, as well as a few real match books. Wow - I am ready to go start the grill! Overall the album falls somewhere comfortably, yet uniquely between surf, rockabilly, and blues. Well done. The Blues Dog says, 4 out of 5 Woof's!
