The 2nd solo piano recording by Michael Straugh blends classical, new age and jazz elements. As meditative and healing as True North, but exploring diverse, new directions. Ekta, for example, portrays how beautifully eastern and western influences blend.

Album Notes

Michael Straugh is a composer, recording artist, pianist and guitarist. His first album of contemporary piano solos, True North, was released in December of 2004. His piano solos have been embraced as meditative, romantic, and healing.

Features "A Winter's Tail" (Top 10 at Broadjam for 8 weeks); "Adagio"; "Looking Back" & " Ekta" (Top 10 at American Idol Underground).

Michael's influences include a disparate group of musical styles and artists. The clearest connections are George Winston and Michael Gettel, but elements of Lyle Mays and Elton John are also evident. Composers he counts as influences include Aaron Copland, Franz Reizenstein, and Antonio Vivaldi; and having grown up in the 1970s, Ian Anderson and Justin Hayward have had their affect as well.

author: Bill Binkelman
Straugh's music blends accessible nostalgic warmth with an adventurous unconventionality... The result is a recording which challenges the listener, without being overly intellectual and still evoking an emotive, human response… If you long for something fresh sounding, The Road Less Traveled is one road you should consider taking.

Melodies that connect at once, rhythms at times calm, at times more lively, yet always fresh, and a quite personal focus, allow the artist to display his creativity without obstacles.

author: MongoKnowsRecords at "The Consensus"
MongoKnowsRecords gave a score of 10 / 10. Comments were: Most excellent. Michael Straugh's "Ekta" is from a dream. Gentle warm winds sweeping down a high plains grassland, basking in a pale blue moonlight slowly rising from a distant horizon. There is just something that comes from the sound of a real Grand Piano - alone - by itself complete. Every note - the interplay of meter between the bass line and higher keys... fabulous recording - perfectly done. Perfect execution. We should all wish we could play this well. Out of 9 Bonez - Mongo give 72
