Every music scene, no matter how large or small, has its own hidden treasure. That is to say, a band or artist that seems to rise above the rest, or at least branch off into something truly unique, but has yet to be thrown onto a national stage. In Oklahoma that band is Student Film. Since their humble beginnings in Oklahoma City in 2003 Student Film has scrambled its way up the food chain and made a name for itself as the storytellers of the indie scene and the future of Oklahoma rock. Amidst the social, political, and religious injustice of modern-day America Student Film has taken the issues personally and refuses to be silenced.
Frontman Justin Rice (guitar, vocals) spins cryptic tales of government secrecy, religious clout, and acid trips with Jesus on top of some of the most tastefully constructed yet surprisingly incendiary rock songs the state has ever seen. The result is a socially conscious message conducted through the medium of a live performance that can be best described as infectious and enthralling.
Over the past year Student Film has completed their first professionally recorded LP, Sleeping Giant, with Trent Bell of The Chainsaw Kittens recording and Starlight Mints frontman Allan Vest producing. The band has also set out on an ambitious venture to create an EP for each of the four seasons.
Aside from presenting a portent quality Sleeping Giant is, in essence, the story of Student Film, showcasing songs from every phase of their musical and personal growth. Vest’s presence can be felt all throughout the album, which swells with a delicate ambience of strings, bells, and laughter. Poetically arcane lyricism, judicious often twangy guitars, captivating organ and piano work, and rhythm section that couldn’t be more complimentary make Sleeping Giant a strong output by the band and a sigh of relief to hungry fans.
The first of the seasonal EP’s, Winter EP (January 2007), exhibits a haunting beauty, playfully cooing at your ears, and features Steven Stark (Starlight Mints) on cello. Now, with the remaining three seasonal EP’s close to completion and awaiting their turn to embody the sound of the season that bears their name, Student Film is already working on its second album, with the dynamic duo of Bell and Vest once again working behind the scenes.
