BIOGRAPHY

Daryl Stuermer grew up on the south side of Milwaukee Wisconsin where he began playing guitar at age 11. Early pop and rock influences such as Elvis Presley, The Ventures and later on, The Beatles were instrumental in shaping his musical style and direction.

As a teenager, studying the solos of jazz guitarists such as Howard Roberts, Wes Mongomery, and Joe Pass provided more challenge for the self taught musician. In the late 60s - early 70s, his influences soon turned to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Larry Coryell and John McLaughlin.

During a 1975 tour date in Milwaukee, Frank Zappa's keyboardist George Duke, sat in with Daryl's band Sweetbottom, at a local night club. Later that year, Duke recommended Daryl for an audition in Los Angeles with jazz violinist, Jean-Luc Ponty. At age 22, Daryl went on his first world tour and recorded four albums with Jean-Luc Ponty.

In December 1977, Daryl met with Genesis member Mike Rutherford in New York City to audition for the role of guitarist/bassist for the upcoming "And Then There Were Three" tour. This began a 20 year relationship with Genesis that Phil Collins defined as a "permanent-temporary-part-time member."

When Genesis singer/drummer Phil Collins formed his own group in 1982, he selected Daryl as lead guitarist and made him a "permanent-touring-recording member." In addition to touring, Daryl has played on all of Collins solo albums and shares writing credits on numerous Grammy winning albums.

Daryl's co-writes with Phil Collins includes: "Something Happened On the Way To Heaven," "I Don't Wanna Know," "Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore," and "Only You Know and I Know."

In between touring with both Genesis and The Phil Collins Band, Stuermer began writing and working on his own music.
After finishing the 1987 Genesis "Invisible Touch" tour, he took the opportunity to record his first solo instrumental album, "Steppin' Out" on GRP Records.

The 90's have brought a diversity of experiences to Stuermer's career as a writer, producer and performer.

    As a guitarist for over 25 years I found Daryl's material a fresh and unique approach to his style of playing. Without a doubt he has been a positive influence on my musical approach. I purchased all of his CD's available here and haven't found a single tune I don't like. I find his very fluent approach to using effects amazing. From one player to another, my hats off to you.

Being that Waiting in the Wings pre-dates Another Side of Genesis, it only proves that Daryl's prominence as a first-rate guitarist has remained and will remain constant throughout the years. This updated due to the fact that I forgot to correctly use the rating system.

    Truly stellar performances and mixing. I have heard some these tunes over the years with different titles and musicans, but they never came across like this. This is a must have CD. I have people stopping by my office just to check out the tunes!

    Stuermer is a brilliant guitarist and composer. I like all the tracks on this album, but my personal favourits are "Wherever you are", "Transatlantic" and in particular "Anthem", one of the best instrumentals ever written! Great melody, very catchy, very emotional. Maybe I'm the only person in Belgium who owns this album, well, I'm very proud of having it.

    After hearing Daryl play at the Easttown Concert in Milwaukee this summer, *had* to get his CD...then had to get a few more through CD Baby. The relaxing music is Milwaukee's finest but also plays well in San Diego. Just tune in and let the music carry you to places in your heart you haven't been in awhile. This music makes me soar!

    This album is another reminder why Smooth Jazz is so popular in North America. It maintains all the feel of great pop music; it's catchy, inspirational and begs to be played over and over. Daryl Stuermer, well known to any Genesis fan as a touring member of the band from 1978 to 1992 and constant back-up to Phil Collins solo works shines on his best album to date. The album opens with the title track, featuring the gentle introspective piano of Kostia whose '10 Pebbles' CD I still consider one of the strongest in the history of the Narada label. This is one of those tracks that jumps out at you, not in tempo but emotional richness; it's simply a pretty tune. Other stand-outs include the good natured acoustic sounding Copenhagen and Road Warrior which seems to draw some inspiration from Stuermer's old pal Jean Luc Ponty. I can't really pick a favorite on this album it's easier to point out that there isn't any filler on Waiting in the wings. This is the kind of CD that sets a career on track and leaves you running to the record shop for more Daryl Stuermer. One of the best Smooth Jazz albums this year. --by John Beaudin

    Being a contemporary jazz artist/producer myself, I'm always on the hunt for material that speaks to me, especially in terms of passion. I heard Darryl's work decades ago in europe and was already aware of his talent, but now there is a CD with the perfect balance of passion, melody/harmony, and plain old fun, actually to a degree which I very much miss in todays contemporary jazz landscape. It's commercial on one side but later on in the record he shows quite some teeth (and chops)!! Some of the songs have hooked themselves permanently into my ear-so there you go! (I have recommended this record to several friends as an example how to preserve an artist's voice in a rather accessible way while keepin the tracks and the performances SMOKIN' Excellent work Darrell!

    Having purchased another side of genesis, it was time to spend some more money! Waiting in the wings is a great idea of live playing but behind closed doors of the studio. The effect is that we have the freedom that we'd expect from a live gig but the sound quality and producing of the studio environment. I've now bought 3 of daryls cd's in 2 weeks..they are definately worth a listen! Cheers from the UK. Steve Cave

    A very good album indeed. Daryl Stuermer has an addictive guitar sound and demonstrates simply awesome playing, which always leaves you wanting more. The music is free of any "smooth jazz" clichees - the band plays with fire and passion, which makes this easy accessible project worth listening too again and again. Good melodies, great playing. Go get it...

    Daryl's latest CD Waiting in the Wings with the Daryl Stuermer Band and special guest Luis Conte of the Phil Collins Band is a CD that has been eagerly awaited for. It has everything from jazz to blues to rock. Daryl performs the songs in live concert fashion with exciting solos but recorded in the studio. With songs like 'Waiting in the Wings' to 'Copenhagen' and 'Transatlantic' you feel as though you have been many places without going anywhere. With Kostia's warm acoustic piano, John Calarco's even tempo on drums, Eric Hervey's mellow bass lines and Daryl's jazzy riffs, it's music that is very complex but easy to listen too.
