For lack of anything better to do, the Subteens formed in the fall of 1995. According to the band, things pretty much went downhill from there. Mark Akin sings and plays guitar and John Bonds plays drums. Terrence Bishop joined the fold in February, 2001 on bass, second guitar and vocals. Mark has been known to perform in his skivvies and a football helmet (for when he falls off the stage). People tend to dance on tables (without helmets) and hang from the rafters during the band's performances. (They also drink a lot of beer, which is why the club owners like this band... a lot!)
This CD was recorded at Young Avenue Sound in Memphis about six months ago, but the band forgot to release it until the studio told them they had to clear all this old stuff out of the media vault. Having said that, Young Ave. Records is proud to release The Subteens on the unsuspecting public...
"Classic punk rock is alive and well in Memphis, thanks in large measure to the Subteens . . ." - Chris Morris, Billboard Magazine
"Dipping into an arsenal of Ramones-inspired chords and Replacements-style songwriting, the Subteens inject just enough melody into their punk to make the end result a delightful compound of sleazy pop." - Amy Sciarretto, CMJ New Music Report
"The Subteens . . . have got their particular punk/pop hybrid greased and running like a champ . . . It's loud, fast, raw, brash, and (surprisingly enough given the preceding adjectives) it's even hummable." - Chris Davis, The Memphis Flyer
