Subversive Element's life really began as jazz saxophonist when he participated in a very active jazz scene in St. Louis, getting to play with such creative music figures as Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill and Joe Bowie. His groups opened concerts for Gil Scott Heron, Billy Cobham, and Tom Scott among others. After that came a tour with Albert King, followed by an extended retirement while he began digging into the world of electronics.

After a long period he resurfaced in 1998 with Biomechanique, a partnership with U.K. DJ Luke Collins. Biomechanique enjoyed a residency at Gabor Csupo's short - lived but brilliant "Lumpy Gravy" as well as making appearences at the L.A. clubs Spaceland and Luna Park. They released one record, "Live at Lumpy Gravy", a full performance from one of their gigs at that club. He then struck out on his own as Subversive Element, appropriate as his life's mission has been to plant the seeds of non-conformist thinking.

His 2001 release "Cool One" is a series of experiments in the lo-fi world, where grainy sounds were seen as a virtue rather than a vice, far different from his 2007 release "Road Trip" that was going for the cleanest possible sound. "Cool One" is a wild mix of influences ranging through DJ Spooky, Stockhausen, Rapoon, Miles Davis, Muslimgauze and Bill Laswell in a loose stream of consciousness style.
