Album Notes

“New York producer Jasun Martz recently found a small canvas painting and audio tape that had been lost for over 30 years in a suitcase in his attic The recording was the only existing copy of the amazing, never before released WHOSE HAT COVERS THAT SUNDIAL? by SUE REED. Martz was so amazed by the 15 songs, he realized the album finally had to be released."

Los Angeles based singer, pianist and composer Sue Reed was a pioneer in the sound that is now made famous by singers like Bjork, Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple, Joanna Newsom, Cat Powers, Aimee Mann, Sarah McLachlan, Suzanne Vega and Leslie Feist. One minute Ms Reed's sounds and lyrics are drenched with beauty and within an instant, the mood darkens and she sings with emotional despair.

In 1978, record producer Jasun Martz, who is known for his avant-garde/contemporary classical recordings like The Pillory/The Battle with the 115-member Intercontinental Philharmonic Orchestra (and who has also played keyboards for MICHAEL JACKSON, toured with FRANK ZAPPA and even helped arrange STARSHIP's hit We Built this City), produced Whose Hat Covers That Sundial?. Unfortunately, the innovative album was never released. Martz moved on to other projects, the master tapes were lost and the public never got a chance to hear Ms. Reed music. Until now.

According to Martz, "Sue's music is hauntingly beautiful. She is one of the most talented musicians and composers I have ever heard. It's fantastic that her music has finally been released after all these years.

The brand new CD is the first time Sue Reed's music has ever been released or heard. The album has been painstakingly reassembled and digitally remastered. Sue’s songs are so contemporary, they sound as if they were recorded this year.

Sue Reed has an amazing and penetrating voice, and she is also a brilliant pianist. Some of the songs here are virtual mini-piano concerti. Her songwriting is intricate and beautiful, with elements of high emotion and sometimes macbre content. Fans of Harry Potter and other paranormal cultural manifestations will sure enjoy and appreciate Reed's wonderfully nuanced and poignant songs. "Spellbinding" is a very apt description of this surperb set of songs. Jasun Martz (former Zappa sideman and a brilliant composer in his own right) lends a hand with virtuosic and endlessly imaginative support on mellotron, bass, and drums. Sue Reed is also a fine painter: she created the strangely beautiful, and quite haunting artwork seen on the cover of this CD.
