Album Notes

ALL LYRICS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE SUGAR RAT WEBSITE

SUGAR RAT is a one-woman punk band. Lorrie, a.k.a. Rat Girl, started the band with her pet rat, Kurt. She is currently recording a second CD in her room. Brent Gonsalves did the drumming for the first Sugar Rat CD, but for the second CD, Lorrie is solo.

Lorrie is the author of the punk lesbian novel, "Sister Safety Pin."

lorrie got her first real rock record, "The Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits," when she was 4 and dreamed of becoming another Alvin Chipmunk. she got her first guitar when she was 10. now she says she is living the Alvin Chipmunk dream. she has never fully adjusted to the Beatles because, she says, they don't play fast enough and their voices are too low.

notes about the tracks:

thanksgiving day
"after dinner it's nice to commit genocide, carving up our meal and everyone else on the side. by now our emotions are zombie-fied. we're right here if Frankenstein wants a bride. after we kill everyone, our slave ships arrive, coming in on the tide, karmic suicide--suicide..." a song about the very special holiday called thanksgiving which celebrates genocide and the attempt to totally destroy Native American cultures. enjoy!

working for the jihad
"Mohammad's 15, gonna be a suicide bomb. Johnny's 15, goes to school with a gun..." i wrote this song about suicide bombers and kids who bring guns to school and end up killing others and sometimes themselves. it's kind of a comparison. i was thinking how to americans, suicide bombers seem insane, and how to anyone who isn't american, kids bringing guns to school and having access to guns at all is insane. we are all killing ourselves and exploding in our different, horrifying ways.

lipstick
"standing in the rain wearing your sweater, the angels that call after me use your name. everywhere i go i pretend i'm walking right behind you and you turn around, see me plain, standing like a stain on the ground in my own orbit, a star, a lonely satellite without a planet to wrap her up and hold her tight...let me kiss your lips without lipstick..." this is a kind of love song.

crawl
"i'm tired of being fucked over by women. from now on i'm only gonna date aliens. or Ann Wilson from the group Heart." this is a kind of lesbian revenge anthem. i wrote it after my friend kate broke up with her girlfriend and wanted me to write a song about that feeling.

automatic rifle dance
"there are no such things as conquering heroes cause the conquered don't find their heroes there. and babies cry without tears. i'm tuning into Radio Islam and the voice of the CIA...anthrax and baby's breath... you got what you wanted..." i wrote this song in 1999 about terrorism, our responses to terrorism and how if we keep on going the way we're going, we'll end up with anthrax. my friend jules calls me "the girl who saw tomorrow."

gutsy kick-ass grrl politics

White Amercian Karma, across the fruited plain! Those are great words. Beautiful voice, good musician, great poet. This stuff was written a few years ago? Could have been yesterday. Or tomorrow, like her friend says.

due to a massive word-of-mouth buzz, this CD is a favorite among rats worldwide. we love this CD! it has political content, bright guitars, brilliant singing and a globally-socially-conscious soul.

Melodically Political Girl Rock, what's not to love?

An excellent beginning for a new band, chock full of all that's right, with none of the wrong egos. Clearly Nirvana inspired (hey, aren't we all?) but still one step further to create their own politically charged anthems, with a girlish twist. Whether lamenting the plight of the afghanistan women (and you east new yorkers thought you had it rough) or challenging past lovers for their abuse, I'd say this little cd is a real keeper. Dancing in the moonlight....
