Suitcase Pimps Unleash \"Love is Grand\" Stereo SACD

The Tale of the Suitcase Pimps begins with the partnership of guitarists Pete Lauck and Brad Henderson. \"We began writing songs and recording them in demo fashion, thinking that no one would ever hear them. We just created music that we wanted to hear,\" says Lauck. At the time the pair were entrenched in the music business via studio work and live projects and more often than not playing music that was not to their liking. \"There is a great compromise you make when you are a gun for hire, these songs were made to quell the inner desire to do something grand,\" exclaims Henderson. \"We never cared whether anyone would hear the music, we just created because we had to,\" states Lauck.

Flash forward a year later when up and coming producer John Billings stumbled upon a DAT recording of the \"Pimps\" demo\'s. \"I was struck most by the inner conflict and torment those songs contained, knowing those two guys personally, I realized that they had both poured there twisted little hearts into every note,\" Billings recalls. Billings immediately contacted the pair. \"This was the diamond in the rough every producer looks for,\" he adds.

Henderson and Lauck then began the process of compiling all the material they had and trimming it down to the absolute best. Yet the turning point in the evolution of the record came when Henderson noticed a central theme in all the songs. \"Once I had all the titles and rough lyrics in front of me, I realized that this record was more than just a collection of songs, it told a story,\" states Henderson. That story would be the rise and fall of a struggling musician. Ending ultimately with his demise to his own demons. \"I got chills when I began lyrically connecting the dots,\" he says.

What emerged from the sessions was a concept record of grand proportions, a \"Pink Floyd\" if you will for the slacker generation. Attention to detail was paramount. Producer John Billings under the tutelage of master rock producer Michael Wagener had learned how to make huge rock statements. But now he was set to make one of his own. Sonically the group spared no expense and the results are devastating. \"This is a headphone record and once it gets in your head, there is no escape,\" Lauck ruminates. \"We take you back in time when musicianship meant something, when great care was taken to make the absolute best record we could,\" adds Henderson. The band crosses genres smoothly and changes directions frequently to keep the listener drawn in.

The most sonically shocking moment is the grand finale. As the strains of \"Goodbye\" fade into the abyss, your taken to an actual graveyard and the sonic landscape is actually buried. As the sounds of a distant train wail, you hear the mumblings of the gravediggers and the dirt being piled on top of the grave. What you are hearing is what it would sound like to be buried alive. What more fitting way to end a modern rock masterpiece?

High Fidelity Review

I've had a chance to listen to the Love is Grand Super Audio CD and it is as impressive as the band's fans and critics have said. It is a rockin' album that features excellent stereo separation and sonics. This will be one that both Rock and SACD fans will want to check out.

THE best record I've heard in years!! I challenge anyone to better this writing. Unbelievable. I've had it for a few years now and just had to order more copies for friends because they COULD NOT BELIEVE THEIR EARS and wondered why the hell radio/the industry wasn't on top of this one from day one. One of my favs forever. Love you, Pete!

Like Floyd? Like Clapton? Try This!
I HAVE OFICIALLY BEEN PIMPED AND IT FELT DANMED GOOD
So, my question is…where has this CD been since its 2003 release? Why is this not on the radio instead of that crappy sh*t put out by lip syncers and boy bands who can’t spell instrument let alone play one? Why, why, why? This is a tragedy – a travesty – and a damn shame.

My first impression/thought is - I was reminded of the first time I heard The Wall. I love The Wall – it is one of the best albums ever made, in my opinion. It is full of history, pain, social commentary – all the stuff that great albums (of any musical genre) have. This CD is up to that standard. From the drug references, to the suicidal tones, to the amazing guitar work, to the helplessness and loneliness, to the woman being at the heart of the problems – this is … The Pimps are … The Pink Floyd of today. Listen to this in the dark and tell me you can’t see lasers pulsing in time to these tracks – go on – I dare ya.

Next is their voices – I had heard Brad Henderson and Pete Lauck on the CD Baby links – but I had no idea how good they really sounded. These men have some amazing talent – at times deep and soulful (You Never Know), at times playful and intentionally (I think) silly - Love Is Grand sounds as if Pete is channeling a cheesy lounge singer (which is an entirely appropriate way to sing to and about the man in this song.) I love their vocal work and lyrics – they really are incredible, and the fact that these guys are not household names now is a “real muther.”

I also cannot get enough of the guitar on this CD – from the heavy driving stuff on Happy Face to the ethereal tones of Halfway to Nowhere – to the twangy Vegas solo – and my favorite – that (again I have to say it) David Gilmore-ish screaming at the end of Save Me – Brad and Pete make the most incredible sounds come out of those little pieces of wood and strings.

Next – John Billings….I love the bass work on Love Is Grand, but what I really think shows John’s prowess as a musician here is the fact that he can take all this talent, energy, angst, comedy, and unbelievable sound and lay it all out so seamlessly, without losing the story in the process. I love that this CD is not what many today are (a collection of unrelated songs thrown together for the sake of having enough tracks to call an album.) It is a whole message – a theme that never changes, but rather carries us along to the inevitable end. I especially like Tweak Street, and to me, it fits – what would a drug laidend, sarcastic, understandably misogynistic, suicidal ode to life today be without a meth lab and an episode of Cops?

As for favorites – the songs that really speak to me lyrically are Halfway to Nowhere (a state I often find myself visiting), Happy Face (I love the lyric about the crooked smile and the cryptic grin – as it follows the bit about laying in a pool of blood with two front teeth missing, it is so full of multiple meanings,) and Save Me (which I connect with on a level that I confess scares me.) One of the funniest lines on the CD to me is “Ephedrine and Vaseline on tweak street,” whoever wrote that definitely scores some big originality points!

And finally, please – take out your credit card and buy this CD – you will be missing out on an amazing musical experience if you leave this out of your collection! I am telling you, if you have ever uttered the phrase, “What happened to all the good music?” it is here – it is The Suitcase Pimps, and it is on sale!!!

Powerful Melodic Modern Rock by Veterans of the Art
A poignant, bitter rock and roll journey where the writers confront their deepest emotions in a slow descent over the edge. Fans of Jellyfish, Pink Floyd, The Who etc. will love this disc which features great writing, production, playing, arranging and a diversity which should appeal to many. Drown is a hit song, period.
