Album Notes

Recorded in Havana, this very smartly constructed project by Japanese flautist Sumiko Fukatsu opens this one up with the classic Enrique Jorrin cha-cha-ch, "La Enga紡dora." The attention to detail and nuance is evident. At once you are become aware that this is something special. Fukatsu, who plays both the modern flute as well the 5 Key wooden Cuban flute (she studied with Joaquin Oliveros, who is also a guest flautist on this CD) takes you by the hand and leads you through some of Cuban musical history, making stops at "El Bodeguero" by Richard Eg歹s, "Laura," and then a beautiful rendition of the fiery charanga "Pare Cochero."
At this point something happens. Enter Bobby Carcass市, legendary Cuban singer and musician. He sets the stage for the second half of this CD which is a modern Latin jazz record that simply swings. Carcass市 wrote and performed on the next two tracks, the explosive "De Tokio A La Habana" and the jazz-blues "Blues Para Chano." Wow.
The CD closes with the stunning "Piel Negra," a haunting original composition by Ms. Fukatsu, as sung by Vania Borges (of Bamboleo). Did I not mention that Vania sings on four of the tracks? Also singing is Manuel Batista, "Manolo Del Valle."
Jesus Rubalcaba on piano, Tat G殃nes on congas.
