Sunshine State began as musical therapy for vocalist Aleza and guitarist/producer James Bryan and over a year has become one of the most vibrant new acts out of Canada. Influenced by everything from Bossa Nova to New Order, Sunshine State brings an infectious acoustic sound and hook filled songs to follow a single young woman ‘s search for love in the city . With exotic Panamanian/Norwegian beauty ,and a personality that shines through every song , Aleza ‘s unique vocal style has drawn comparisons to Amy Winehouse, Blossom Dearie, and Feist . Meanwhile , James isone of Canada's top guitarists and an award winning producer and songwriter, with a hand in over a million albums sold, and over 30 top 40 radio hits , working with artists including : Nelly Furtado, Fefe Dobson,Divine Brown and the Philosopher Kings.

A brilliant live show that combines Aleza’s magnetic sweet-yet-smoldering persona with James’ electrifying guitar work, have won Sunshine State loyal fans and a strong buzz from their hometown of Toronto to the UK & Japan.. Releasing a three song EP this past summer, Sunshine State secured a national Canadian tour opening up for The Philosopher Kings, and subsequently sold over 3000 CD’s off the stage alone. Notable local Dj/tastemaker John Kong fell in love with the crowd favorite “Day Job” which led to the international release of several remixes on his Do Right label in January 2007. This 12 inch release which included remixes from Toronto producer & DJ’s Alistair Johnson & Circle Research managed to sell out immediately in Japan & Canada , and win new fans in the UK..

Susnhine State’s self titled debut was recorded in Toronto at James’ studio over the second half of 2006 , and turned all the ups and downs of Aleza’s daily lifeinto musical inspiration .With her crystal clear voice and James’ soulful and dynamic acoustic guitar as the core , the duo were joined by some of their most talented friends to flesh out the band .Marc Rogers, one of Canada’s top bassists(Susan Tedeschi,Philosopher Kings) and a virtuoso in his own right , brings a low end warmth to the album with his acoustic bass , while percussionists David Gouveia and Daniel Stone add a funky latin flavour to the tracks .Another friend , top session and touring drummer Davide Direnzo has a guest spot on a track. As producer and mixer , James Bryan added some gritty drum programming to balance the organic feel of the band , making the album a seamless marriage of old and new.

The single “Day Job” is an anthem for nine-to-fivers everywhere, while “Drugdealer (A Love Song) take a humorous look at the uncomfortable scenario of dating someone with a less than savory job. “Booty Call” delves into the things we do for lust, while “Thank You(for Leaving)” is a perfect kiss-off to an ex who’s unworthy . Each song tells a story , one that we’ve all been through , or can relate to . Released through James’ label Umi Entertainment , Sunshine State has enough soul , humour and good vibes to keep you smiling long after the song fades out.
