Album Notes

Suphala is a tabla player that studies with Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain. Not many artists out there can successfully tie together elements of classical music with those that are considered progressive. However, the few that can achieve this feat use the more obvious ones at their disposal. Suphala is an artist that surpasses the obvious through her visionary and unique musical style.

Suphala trains as a classical tabla player and also produces music that goes beyond the expectations of adventurous taste-makers from around the world. Her talent was embraced and utilized by strong arms in American and European music including Perry Ferrell (Jane's Addiction, Porno For Pyro), Nina Hagen, Joan Osbourne, Vernon Reid, Lady Ms. Kier (Dee-Lite) as well as fellow electronic producers like DJ Logic and DJ Mutamassik. She continues to collaborate with musicians and DJ's from around the globe.

The release of her debut, INSTRU MENTAL, has established Suphala as an artist who's only begun to tap into the art of braiding time-honored sounds of warmth and tradition with the welcomed irreverence of neo-digital landscapes. Her collection of songs are a clear sign of her sophistication and longevity as an artist.

Not as good as "The Now". Great tablas but a little monotonous in the fascinatio

Suphala really is a tabla player worth noticing. And it often is interesting when "east meets west" in a mix of traditional beats and modern electrical sounds. BUT sometimes - this being one those times - the music drowns in the fascination of the possibilities of electrical sounds. I will definitely be on the lookout for other albums that Suphala may publish, but so far I prefer "The Now" over "Instru Mental".
