Talking about possibly the best surf band in Europe with the longest and most solid career ever (can't believe it's almost 30 years since their first single “Mickey's Car”!), believe us if we say “more of the same” means the highest compliment.
The Surfin Lungs have been filling our lives with catchy vocal surf hits like the legendary “Spirit Of Australia”, “The Beach Will Never Die”, “Pray For Sun” or “Beach Bound”. Their formula mixes 50% of Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, 25% of The Ramones and the remaining 25% with different new wave classics.
Full Petal Jacket (WPR 2009) is their latest studio work and contains all those things you can't do without on a Lungs album: vocal harmonies a go-go, incredibly catchy melodies, a bit of Farfisa here and there, winks to the best R&R done in the 50's and 60's, a couple of blistering instrumentals and 14 songs about summer, girls, dances with no name, bubblegum summers, surf punks and girls gone wild.
It's always hard to pick a favorite Lungs song, but our top 5 for this album (as of now, most likely will change within minutes) would be “Perfect Summer” (combining a lot of the good stuff new-wave brought back to R&R), “Let's Have A Beach Party” (can't ever go wrong with those 3 chords and classic arrangements! Hot Rod'n'Roll!), “Bubblegum Summer” (with Clive singing lead on one of their best mid-tempos to date), the intense instrumental “97FX11” and last but not least, the closing track “The Surf's Up”, an instant Surfin' Lungs classic drenched in pa-pa-pa's, groovie reverb and guitar licks.
Cant wait to catch the band live again and have them do their trick of bringing back summer, at least for an hour, even when it's months (and degrees!) away, an effect that this album will undoubtedly have on all listeners too
