Album Notes

Recorded live in two sessions in 2009, this album features Bruce Friedman-trumpet, Jonathon Grasse-guitar, Ken Luey-woodwinds, David Martinelli-drums, Jeff Schwartz-bass, and Charles Sharp-woodwinds and percussion.

Surrealestate was first formed in 1977 by saxophonist, composer and scholar Robert Reigle. He brought the name and concept with him to UCLA in the 1990s where the collective has included many graduate students at UCLA as well as local musicians. The collective focuses on improvisation and the performance of compositions by its members and contemporary concert and jazz composers. These have included pieces by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Charles Ives, Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor.

The group has performed at the Big Sur Experimental Music and Long Beach Soundwalk Festivals; the Hammer Museum; a number of colleges including UCLA, Cal. State Dominguez Hills, Harbor College and El Camino College; the line-space-line music series; as well as art galleries and coffee shops including Cold Storage, Dangerous Curve and The Tribal Cafe.
