I like a good lyric and an honest singer that serves the lyric and the tune. Susan's songwriting grew on me with each repeated listening, and the subtle background vocals were a joy to discover. This is a crossover recording, one of the tunes would live happily on an Alison Krauss record and another has Peter Gabriel style treatment. Of course, she is clearly influenced by Fagen and Mitchell, evident in the horn arrangements and style. I loved those records, and I can't wait to hear more from Marder.
