Album Notes

In Berkeley, California, Susannah Sandow sticks out like a sore thumb; or, perhaps, a gracefully extended middle-finger. After some time haunting the coffee shops of Berkeley, Susannah grew tired of watching women who aspired only to emulate the generic acoustic waif-rock that had first emerged on the stages of Lillith Fair in the late nineties. She picked up her guitar and wrote songs whose aim was to unceremoniously smash the preconceptions we all have about "chicks with acoustic guitars." Thank God. No more hopelessly saccharine and eternally optimistic lyrics; finally an end to affected Joni Mitchell falsettos.

Susannah has spent time honing her chops in the dive bars of Oakland and neighboring San Francisco, and her somewhat enigmatic persona has garnered her a devoted following. Audiences, drawn in by her honest smile and melodic voice, are often forced to take a step back after perceiving the sardonic candor of her lyrics. Sometimes her words emerge tinged with an all-too-perceptible vitriol, and you half-expect her amused grin to transform into a punk-rock sneer. It never does, however; Susannah's charmingly adept at doing what you'd least expect.
