The Christmas season, as we celebrate it today, comes to us from a complex mix of European traditions---the French, the British, and most importantly, the German. So many wonderful songs help us celebrate and remember this season, many of them old and from anonymous sources. But classical composers are people too, with their Christmas beliefs and their Christmas memories, and many have written their own versions of seasonal music. Of the composers whose work fills this collection of song, most are not likely well-known to the English-speaking concert audience: Respighi, Chaminade, Trunk, Reger, Niedlinger, and especially Cornelius. Only Fauré speaks of Christmas through his most known compositional genre.

Christmas Treasures for the Connoisseur

If you are completely tired of "Adeste Fidelis", "O Holy Night", and "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen"
you will want to give ear to this extraordinary and unusual collection of Seasonal Classical Rarities.
The composers range from Humperdinck and Cornelius to Gabriel Faure and Respighi and are sensitely performed with reverence and panache. Miss Sevier has a most rich and distinctive contralto voice which is vibrantly captured in this recording, and the excellent support rendered her by pianist Cheryl Branham could hardly be bettered. The vocal renditions are stylish, and this compilation is a sorely needed addition to the vast list Christmas song collections. If you appreciate fine singing and great repertoire, this recording will appeal to you. The performances are very well recorded, and the microphone obviously likes Miss Sevier's voice as it faithfully documents her distinct timbre and finely detailed artistry.
