Album Notes

SUSAN WATSON

Susan Watson delighted Broadway audiences in the hit musicals, BYE BYE, BIRDIE, CARNIVAL, BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS, A JOYFUL NOISE, CELEBRATION, and NO, NO, NANETTE. She also appeared in the Richard Rodger's production of CAROUSEL at New York's Lincoln Center and was then asked by him to star in OKLAHOMA at the City Center with John Davidson. Susan studied at the Juilliard School, and her first professional job was in Jerome Robbins's London production of WEST SIDE STORY. Upon returning to the U.S.A., she was cast in a one act musical headed for an off-Broadway production called THE FANTASTICKS. She later re-created the role of Luisa from THE FANTASTICS on NBC- TV's Hallmark Hall of Fame, starring John Davidson, Bert Lahr, and Ricardo Montalban. She has been honored with a Tony nomination for her performance on Broadway in A JOYFUL NOISE... with a New Jersey Drama Critics Award for Best Actress in a musical for THE MUSIC MAN... and with a San Diego Starlight Award for MY FAIR LADY...She has appeared at the Hollywood Bowl in performances with symphony orchestras. She toured the U.S.A. for Columbia Artists in the popular musical review, A BROADWAY CELEBRATION, and is currently performing her own one-woman show, THE FANTASTICK JOURNEY OF LIFE THROUGH THE SONGS OF TOM JONES AND HARVEY SCHMIDT. Director of the show, Ted Sprague, refers to Susan as "a force of nature -- a natural -- the quintessential Broaday ingenue now grown up."

Miss Watson's CD, "Earthly Paradise" is a musical tribute to her dear friends, the team of lyricist Tom Jones and his composer partner, Harvey Schmidt. She is widely regarded as a prized artist in performing songs from their shows, THE FANTASTICS, I DO I DO, 110 IN THE SHADE, CELEBRATION, COLETTE, COLETTE/COLLAGE, and from their early works from New York City's cabaret scene.

I am glad to see you got what you wanted and so did I when Earthly Paradise arrived. Saw you in Fantasticks but have lived with Celebration. You've aged well, my dear, with joy and delight. Now my 10th grandchild sings with me to your voice.

I've followed Susan since her days as Kim in Bye Bye Birdie in 1960 and her voice has never been better. It's a joy to have a CD with all these Jones and Schmidt songs she sings so well.

My cup runeth over with love and admiration for Susan. Her lyrical butterscotch voice touches my soul. She is so good she could expand her list easily from Broadway tunes to classic songs such as most of the type Rod Stewart did in his last few albums. A Foggy day in London Town, or Under a Blanket of Blue would melt our hearts. Do you think she would ever consider that? I hope so. It would be a treat for the universe.
