Dirty South vocals over an Up North beat? Nah, man. It’s not supposed to be. It’s like a white girl with a big ass. A mutation of the varied kind. But, that’s what you get from a swamp full of soldiers, 9 deep to be exact. What’s even worse is that the Swamp Soldiers have the lyrical precision of a laser engraving machine. Just from talking to Blaze, the group’s head, you can hear the rabid hunger that these cats bring to the mic. But here’s the twist: even though Swamp Soldiers are signed to Smackaya Face Recordings, a label based in Ft. Lauderdale, they all lived and grew up in Ocala. Central Florida’s best kept secret? Yeah, maybe, but not for long though. The single "Wazzup Girl" is set to hit commercial airwaves on November 12th. It’s already getting underground airplay in Miami and the track is definitely a club banger! But the train doesn’t stop there, because February 2003 is the month the album will drop. For nine cats who have been doing this for five years, this is a dream come true. "Master P says the sky’s the limit. We ain’t got no limit, not even the sky," added Blaze. His girl’s cousin hooked him up with Cima, the executive producer for Smackaya Face Recordings, and that’s how things got started. Within less than a year of signing the paperwork, their shit is pre-packaged and ready to go. On most 15-track albums, there’s only a few standout tracks, but the Swamp Soldiers manage to make theirs excellent the whole way through. "Pimps Up" is another track that stands out. The beat is grimy, all nine of the crew are sick with the flow, and the guest vocalist Pretty Don sounds like a Baby Cham / Bounty Killa offspring. After hearing just a snippet of their flavor, I was hungry for more. Orlando cats might know of them already, because Blaze and Granddaddy Souf recently collaborated on a track called "Dirty" which is set to drop soon. The group also did a track with Miami’s No Good, adding to their list of celebrity collabos. These cats are hot. South Florida knows it, and now you know it. For a group with such an unassuming name they make sure that with every beat and lyric you don’t forget it.
