CD#2 from singer/songwriter/pianist Bill Swann is a continuation of the quirky but refined style that made his first CD "Awake But Somehow Dreaming" a critical success. The recording is a true solo effort with Swann performing all instruments and doing all of the production, mixing, programming, etc. The notable exceptions are two great solos, one by trumpeter Vance Thompson on "Falling Down" and the other by guitarist Harry Smith on "Zoloft."
The CD is only slightly more serious than "Awake..." with many of the songs drawing their inspiration from fictional or larger-than-life characters. In fact, three of the cuts are fairly obvious references to films. We'll let you figure out which.
A great CD showcasing the songwriting talents of an offbeat, multi-faceted, and immensely talented musician.

Oh yeah!

I heard about this musician from a friend in NJ. It is really nice to hear that some indie artists are more concerned with the craft of making great songs rather than keeping up with what they think is fashionable. This CD is a great collection of tunes that reassures me that all is not lost in the world of rock music. I absolutely love Nouveau and Zoloft. Better than anything I've heard on the radio in years. There is a touching honesty to this recording that is strange considering the subject matter of the songs. I would love to hang out with this guy.

Better than the Last One

Swann's previous effort (Awake But Somehow Dreaming) was pretty good. However, I think this album is better; it maintains Swann's lyrical cleverness while producing better songs. It is also different enough from the first one so that it doesn't sound like a sequel. Standouts include "I Dream in Color", "Zoloft", "All About the Music", "Falling Down", and "Ultralight". This album is less accessible than Awake, but after you get used to it, it's better than Awake. If you like Awake, there's no reason why you shouldn't check this one out.

Fantastic!

I bought my copy from a local music store in knoxville, so I'm not sure I can review it on CDBaby. But, if I can, I think this disc is great. I have seen Bill perform many times in jazz groups such as the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra and in trios with Rusty Holloway but I never knew that there was this poet/songwriter in him as well. Excellent songs. Reminds me of Paul Simon a little bit vocally and Gerry Rafferty or Steely Dan musically. My favorite tune is No Bears--great jazzy piano with some interesting lyrics. All about the music is a great laid back groove with hilarious lyrics (at least I think they are meant to be funny in that Ben Folds kind of ironic way). Bill, PLEASE PLAY THIS MUSIC LIVE SO I CAN GO HEAR IT!!!!!
