Album Notes

Swell Bean (then Chris Purcell) started making music around the lovely age of 8 with friend Billy Kotchkoski... the group was first named Butt Fungus, then changed to Wanted For Love (or WFL), the third and final name was Curmudgeon. Recorded a bunch of albums as a two-piece and did a few shows then adding on Derek Deprator to fill in on the missing live-action gap. The group was well received even made on their albums sort of a cult classic in Cleveland. After the fame and tragedy in the late 90s... the group split.

Chris then joined the Cleveland band Chump on bass with Mike Koch, Miss Melvis, and Steve Mehlman (of pere ubu-fam). The group performed many shows and even made an appearance on PBS. After that, Chump drifted off...

Mike and Chris went on to form a new band The Confidence Interval with Billy Kotchkoski and various drummers. The band played a lot of shows and recorded. However, after Billy went to medical school, the band wasn't the same and split.

Chris then started working more on film and was in the process of making a documentary about Derek Deprator and his band the Atomic Crash. In the process, he was asked to join as a third-guitarist (!). Began recording with them... after the drummer quit, he took over the drumming duties and when Mike Koch and his brother Art joined and Chris was shifted to bass. The group recorded an entire album and broke up before releasing it.

In '06, Chris' solo project Swell Bean started going into a full affect. In January, he booked his first show at a coffee house to test material and see how it felt to perform solo. In the summer, he began writing and recording the first album. The album was completely written, performed, and recorded by himself. The album was finished in time for his first 'real' show at Spaces Gallery as part of the Gutter Hall exhibit in September. The show was full on rock with Chris on guitar and vocals and his dad's laptop playing the rhythm section of the album.

The album is weird, raw and just plain interesting. Let’s see, if I was more interesting I would come up with my own short spiel about the Foggy Mess; however, I am not and will not. So, in describing the unique I am going to use the generic phrases that send chills down the spine of those who think. Unique, Caters to a wide range of people, a real interesting sound, artistic, yummy, thought provoking...etc.
