Alli's best work to date
author: Lea Bender
Alli's seamless shifts from dark depths to operatic highs on "100 Birds" take the listener on an emotional, metaphysical journey though an aural landscape both earthly and ethereal. Alli's style, while distinct, is at times reminiscent of the liltiing, gothic sound of Loreena McKennitt yet can also bring to mind the dark, experimental edge of PJ Harvey (but without the punk overtones, think 'White Chalk' rather than 'Uh Huh, Her'). Sylvi's haunting vocals are accompanied by an impressive assortment of instruments and soundscapes (all played and created my Alli herself) ranging from banjo to accordion to music box. The complexity and depth of the songs, both musically and lyrically make for an album that doesn't wear out after a few listens; the songs seem to magically reveal something new each time. If you are a fan of Alli's already, this cd is a must; it is her best work yet. If you are not familiar with Alli, "100 Birds" is a great introduction to a a little known artist with a major talent and a unique style.

a deeply compelling contrariness weaves subtle textures of melody and harmony
author: Katrina Wilson
Sylvi's songs and music, especially her voice, has this simultaneous effect on me. She gives me goosebumps while soothing my soul. Her songs stir me up while calming me down. In "100 Birds" this deeply compelling contrariness weaves subtle textures of melody and harmony into a gentle hypnotic complexity. These songs are clearly mezmerising. I especially love the haunted feeling of "Blood", the eerie majesty of "Sovereign", the playfully droll "Dying Star" and the devilishly delicious, "Maenad". Though her vocal talent can be compared with Celtic songstress Loreena Mckennitt and even the genius of Lisa Gerrard, Sylvi's voice is all her own. Highly recommended.
