Album Notes

Symbion Project is proud to announce the release of their 3rd full length album!

"wound up by god or the devil" is the soundtrack to a movie that has not yet been made. this is an album that symbion project did not expect to make; this is an album that you probably did not expect to hear. encapsulated within are collisions or epic forces, chaotic sexuality, religious underpinnings, melancholy moments frozen in time, enlightened fragments of joy.

while taking 3 week respite from working on another full length Symbion album, "wound up by god or the devil" literally burst into existence. moved by the epic nature of Vangelis (blade runner, chariots of fire) & the retro/future aesthetic of Wendy Carlos (clockwork orange, tron), Symbion Project created a "baroque minimalist electro" album that could live seamlessly in 1762, 1972, & 2162.

concerned with the non-dynamic, robotic stagnancy of current electronic music, along with the overwhelming nature of being surrounded by a studio full of synthesizers & blinking audio gear, this dynamic album was crafted using only a single 16vco analog synthesizer. very little was sequenced (except for the blazingly fast runs that Bach himself couldn't do!) & almost all the parts were played in by hand. constant attention was given to exploiting & exaggerating the emotional tension of the songs through the use of dynamics, from the initial songwriting to the final mastering (analog of course).

for nearly the last 2 decades, symbion project has been the ongoing electronic music endeavor of kasson crooker.
during this time, kasson created the blippy synthpop band Freezepop which has released 3 albums and toured all over the world, was part of the late 90's electronic rock trio Splashdown, and has worked on many music videogames like Amplitude, Guitar Hero1/2, Phase, and RockBand.

the first full length symbion project cd "RED" came out in 1997 followed by "Immortal Game" in 2003, with artwork by stoltze design. 2006 saw the release of "Wound Up By God or the Devil" eschewing the traditional beat-driven downtempo songs for synthesizer-only soundscapes in the spirit of wendy carlos (tron, a clockwork orange) and vangelis (bladerunner). in 2006, Universal Hall Pass (UHP) released "Subtle Things" EP which features 3 remixes by symbion project and 3 original songs co-written with melissa r kaplan (ex-splashdown). the most recent album from symbion project, entitled "Misery in Soliloquy" was just released in fall of 2009 and returns to the sounds on "Immortal Game." once again esoteric beats, haunting synths are joined by k*ss*n and melissa's vocals accompanied by lush strings by simon swarbrick. beautiful artwork by dorothea van camp graces the album art, once again handled by clifford stoltze.
