I tend to be suspicious of European acts that try to ape American roots music forms. (I’m sure they look askance at us when we try to appropriate European stylings as well.) But The Tallest Man on Earth, despite being from Sweden, sounds as if he instead lives on the back porch of a log cabin in the Appalachian mountains. “Walk the Line,” “Into the Stream” and “Steal Tomorrow” are more than just faithful representations of a time when the Carter Family and Dock Boggs ruled the hit parade—they’re continuations of the same spirit, a celebration of the magic that can be made with just a voice, a guitar, simple sentiments and soul.
