Album Notes

In the last couple of years, more and more fans of instrumental guitar music became aware of an interesting guitar player from Hungary. This new guy on the scene, Jonas Tamas, sounds a bit different than your “average” guitar hero. He has managed to create a unique style of hard rock, progressive, shred elements, combined with a hint of fusion and funk here and there.

Jonas Tamas has played with several bands in his country, making successful gigs on the biggest rock festival in Central Europe, Sziget Festival.

His debut instrumental guitar album, with the profound title "Sharp Guitars From A Flat Planet" contains over 64 minutes of guitar-driven instrumental music. It is a very diverse album, with songs ranging from progressive metal, through neoclassical shred to bluesy riffage, pure hard rock to mellow moments with piano and acoustic guitars.

As Jonas states in interviews, he strives to put unexpected elements, sounds and approaches in his music, sometimes by using uncommon scales or modal changes (like the appearance of the special “Locrian natural 6” scale in the main riff of Locrian Locusts), or combining the heaviest segments with delightful acoustic passages (for example in the song entitled Stormbeaten, which tells the story about the formation and the raging of a huge storm).

Besides the 12 songs on the album, there is a free downloadable 'Sharp Guitars Bonus Pack', which contains a 6-minute-long bonus track called 'Balance in Hand' plus a greeting card - and what's more, also guitar tablatures of some of the riffs and solo segments from the album, and backing tracks for the solo sections of Zenith and Eloquent Look. If you purchase the album on CDBaby then you are entitled to request the 'Sharp Guitars Bonus Pack', just write a mail to the artist asking for the package.

This album is the reason why I love guitar instrumentals. Jonas really knows how to create catchy melodies to keep you wanting more, solos that compliment the songs and at the end of it all you are wanting more. This is a very good debut solo album from a creative and talented musician!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

"Sharp guitars" is far from a generic shred cd. Yes Jonas can pull rippling arpeggios out of nowhere and treverse the fretboard in fluid and melodic fashion, but it's his compostional flair that makes his music stand out. An usual cocktail of sounds is another factor, very crunchy rhythm guitars, celestial sci-fi string washes and soaring vai-esque lead tones... lovely!

Sharp Guitars From a Flat Planet

„Sharp Guitars From a Flat Planet” is definitely a must have for everybody who likes music by guitar virtuosi. With his amazing debut album, Jonas Tamas opens a door to a new world of guitar playing. Listening to this masterpiece is pure enjoyment. Each track is exciting and creates a fantastic atmosphere, not least due to the use of exotic scales and modes (eg. Lydian augmented or Locrian natural 6). The Album is full of mind-blowing shred parts, soulful melodies, groovy riffs and great arrangements. I just can recommend buying this high quality CD!

Simply Great

Great sound, if you like Vai, Satriani and other guitar virtuosos you will enjoy this album. Amazing guitar player, the "sharp" part of the album is not an exaggeration. It is really a refreshing sound and album for the genre.
