Album Notes

Tamsen Fynn's songs sounded like haunted fields and being lost thousands of miles from home. Basically, she had to start learning covers so she could add some lightness to her shows. That, and playing some of the songs she actually wrote for kids, like "Elevator" and "Little Umbrellas".

By the age of eight she had seen more revolutions than yellow and blue injection-molded plastic big wheels. After landing in New Orleans in 1979 she was forced to forget her Spanish once she asked for the bathroom three times in a department store before realizing why the woman at the counter was looking at her like she was an idiot.

So when her family settled in Ohio by way of Zimbabwe, England & Nicaragua she felt like an alien on a suburban planet. Granted, she never got to Zimbabwe until 1990, but the first eight years of her life were filled with Miriam Makeba, Johnny Clegg, and South African choirs turning on the record player. Crossing three continents gave her plenty of material for storytelling and while it never quite paved the way for a career in songwriting, it certainly inspired plenty of material.

She then landed in San Francisco and has since recorded six cds in seven short years, two for the night crowd and four for the under-ten set. After releasing Miles Away she married Eduardo Morell, packed up a box of her CDs, and set off on a 'round the world journey. On a small island west of the Thai peninsula with a travel guitar in hand, Tamsen realized she had finally taken her show on the road. The images from her latest travels both brought back memories from her childhood and fueled a new cycle of songs, never to be recorded.

Instead, she has decided to send her current cds to anyone who will take good care of them. Just say the word, as the old gospel tune reminds us... Since Solitaire is not even on CdBaby, she'll happily mail a free copy to anyone who buys, or downloads, Miles Away. Really, it's probably even better than the second album, but she ran out of money and time after her first efforts. Although the title tune Solitaire is over the top psychedelia, most of the album switches between folk rock and 50's style jazz. Well, maybe there are actually only two jazz numbers. The other flip-flop is probably classified as americana. That said, she hopes you'll help her reclaim a few basement shelves by giving some sincere and imperfect music a loving home.
