notes

Where are we going? Science! Murder! Sex! Killer robotic spiders! Men who are not animals! Men who are ducks! We will race to the moon!

Built on spastic technical riffy metalic nerdy punk, Anthemunanthem delivers an excitement-per-minute ratio that few other discs can afford.

Song themes range from the perverse stalkings of manical rapist "Herman Keypad", to the action-packed science fiction dramas of "Number 28" and "Spiderfarm".

The music is metal and clean guitar, expertly played like a horny savant show-off - bass is overplayed with lots of notes and pops and Primusy hammerons - drums are likety-split and tight. Three people sing and scream and talk over the fast, fast, hectic music. Songs are the opposite of repititous - they are partsy and busy and tight and hectic and frantic - grooves are only tasted for seconds, and you'll have to listen to the disc again if you want to hear a chorus twice.

This record sounds like the riffy talky parts of Nomeansno, speed and riffs of The Victim's Family, (in fact, much of the Alternative Tentacles catalog might be appropriate comparisons) Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, (and other Mike Patton stuff) ,Devo, John Zorn-like rapid changes and jazzy interludes, Failure - like riffs and science fiction themes, Queen!. moments of punk like SNFU or The Offspring, The Flaming Lips, Mark Ribot and the Rootless Cosmopolitans, some bass wizardry like Primus, many moments like Helmet's "Meantime", fans of Thrice might enjoy all the super-guitar played here, even moments of Metallica or Iron Maiden can be heard, They Might Be Giants? cartoony moments that come from Bugs Bunny shorts, jokes! drama! Kalamazoo 93' comtemporaries (e.g., Thought Industry, Twitch, Killswitch, Sounds like Braille), Unique? No, but at least very rare! I'm doing my best here to describe - Download #28 - its a good sample.

Pop music fans should absolutely hate this. Passive listeners who like to snap their fingers and sing along should go check out The Hudson Debacle (my other cool band).

  • A breathe of fresh creativity!

It is rare to find such creativity in music. I am not only writing of this artist/album but of all TASM Lab artists for that is truly what they are, artists. I am only sorry that I did not discover this sooner.

  • got this 1993 - still the bomb 2003
    author: John Newberry (john_newberry@yahoo.com)

starting with the bicyle "ching ching" this thing never stops with insanely tight ripping clamour of delicious precision. i thought back in the nineties that these guys would take over the world then i never heard of them again. herman keypad's adventures, the stories of the spider farm and number 28 make the most spiritual of times chaotic and puts a smile on my face especially when they talk about their bicycles. tra la la la la la la la tra la la lal la la.

  • My review of the cd, "Screwtape Year1.993k Anthemunathem..."
    author: Protoclone

Oh man, does this bring back the good times of seeing these guys live. I remember the first time I saw them, it was magical. I was on the outside of a moshpit, people were stinky from beer, or was it sweat? The kids in the moshpit didn't quite know how to mosh to Screwtape, but they did it anyways. Like I said, it was magical. I looked for this cd for almost a decade, then by mistake I found the website (cdbaby) that was selling the cd. I was so happy that I came several times. No one understood my since of conquest for this unique band. This is a band that only comes once in a life time. Good timing, tight sound, and overall fun to listen to. I play this cd with pride to know that at one time Kalamazoo was home to these creative men. Never has Kalamazoo recovered from the likes of them, nor will anyone see another one like them. 1993 was the year that Kalamazoo housed many great bands, and Screwtape was the tip of the iceberg leading the way to sink the Titanic. Momentous, dazzling, genius...I can't go on anymore without busting into tears. I love you guys, please come back for at least one show. For me.
