Album Notes

TASTER SOUNDS FROM THE FUNKY UNDERGROUND VOLUME 2 140 minutes! 2XCDS) A beautifully eclectic double CD compilation from UK label Chocolate Fireguard, chosen as one of only 8 imports in "Best Of British" Virgin Megastores USA. Check out www.myspace.com/chocolatefireguardmusic and www.chocolatefireguard.com for more info..................

ALLMUSIC.COM "Tucked deep in the wilds of Yorkshire, England, nestled between the edge of a National Park and the southern tip of the Pennines mountain range, lays Huddersfield, home to Chocolate Fireguard record label. Although only established in 2000, the imprint marked out an enviable roster of talent very quickly, aided by label manager Pat Fulgoni's work as an agent for live bands. The genre trouncing Taster compilations offer a snap shot of the label at the time of their release, with this second album holding court to over 20 acts, the majority of whom have already enjoyed considerable success on the European live circuit. With Fulgoni's own work with upbeat dance act Kava Kava it is little surprise to find much of the music orientated around
funk, with even the hip hop of Cantaloop and the drum and bass of Acetate underpinned by Bootsy-licious bass work and tumbling breakbeats. The labels core artists, comprising oft-maudlin breakbeat soul Bluefoot Project, the aforementioned Kava Kava and French seven piece hip hop outfit La Cedille steal the show however, with the latter's Autonome demonstrating much promise for an album due in 2004 on the same label"

DESCRIPTION

sit back, listen and taste the truth. a funky chill all mashed up, and full of soul! F**K ALL CAUTION! here's over two and a quarter hours of tuff, unadulterated, underground sounds from the cream of the live club scene. if you want to know what's really going on, do yourself a favour and check these cosmic funky minds, regularly ripping it up live in sweaty clubs and festivals across europe, from full on sixties flavoured jazz funk to french speaking hip hop to experimental dance vibes from Norway.

building on the underground success and acclaim of the first, chocolate fireguard hits back with a bargain double selection featuring: markoni (the egg), jesus haystax, headbound, the bluefoot project, cienna, capri, cantaloop, kava kava, germander speedwell (zion train), diesel bug, acetate, xploding plastix, d'booga, shod, slowburn, quattro, ça (la cedille!), ism, chillinuts, yakboy, astrovibe, laserkid, bootis, carbon city, world gov't, neeb, ashfelt, suspect package.

A few highlights:

recognize Shod's chilled vocals?....it's Rachel from Ibiza smash "21st Century" by the Weekend Players (an Andy Cato/Groove Armada project) caught here in her natural environment.

check out the Germander Speedwell (Zion Train) mix of Kava Kava's "Beats for Cheats"........continuous support from the likes of Freddy Fresh "funky as hell kids"

Again "Maui" showcases Kava Kava's soulful singer Pat Fulgoni from Subliminal Soul J Haystax smash "Still In Luv With You' but here with Kava Kava in his natural environment

check out Markoni's "Think Dirty" ..... a classic offshoot from infamous festival outfit The Egg

check out two beautiful offerings from The Bluefoot Project featuring the crucial vocals of Rachel Modest.

A funktastic collection of choons and grooves from the Chocolate Fireguard label. Really spoilt for choice here. This is one long 2 Cd set jam packed with some funky gems that are sure to turn you on. I'm particularly feeling the monster opener from Marconi "Think Dirty", Yakboy's "You know what it is" Kava Kava's "Beats for Cheats" but you really are spoilt for choice here.... there's even some French hip hop from a band called "Ca" on this wonderful collection of new music and I for one want to hear some more from this fine band......

Strike two, from the fantastic Chocoloate Fireguard label that keep churning out the cream of the crop.A phenomenal selection of more funk, more soul, more laid back beats that has done justice to the first Taster compilation. Eagerly awaiting the third instalment to complete what is sure to be a mind blowing musical trilogy.

Various “Taster … Sounds From The Funky Underground Volume 2” (chocolate fireguard) I’m digging this. From the first minutes this proves to be one monster of a leftfield compilation. I’ve always been a fan of ‘the Egg’ and ‘Think Dirty’  from Markoni (its an Egg offshoot baby!) does not disappoint here with its awesome proggy groove, followed by the dark and sinister ‘Jesus Haystax’ who laments how “everyone loves brad pitt”  over some seriously tough house beats and guitar riffs…..woah scary stuff! But it’s the eclectic diversity of this collection that makes this such a truly great find. The Bluefoot Project’s ‘Soma’ and Kava Kava’s ‘Maui’ rule the chill out moments, while in soundtrack land Norway’s ‘Xploding Plastix’ reappear with the marvellous “Sports Not Heavy Crime’. Capri launch a rocket with “Car Chase On Phoenix Avenue”  Ism bosh out drumn’n’techno (?) with ‘Nu for Ireland’, French hip hoppers ‘Ça’ delight with the smooth vibes of ‘Autonome’ If you are after something daring, fresh and full of surprises, then these two and a half hours are for you……Funktastic!
