Tatiana Sarbinska is a world-renowned Balkan vocalist and teacher. Born in the village of Rila in Bulgaria, she rose quickly through the ranks of the finest Bulgarian state choruses to become one of the preeminent solosts of her generation. For many years, she was the featured soloist of the internationally acclaimed Pirin Ensemble. With Pirin, she toured extensively and made numerous recordings, and films for television. Her extensive repertoire includes music from all of Bulgaria's folklore regions. Tatiana has been awarded "National Treasure" status and renown as "The Voice of Bulgaria" by the Bulgarian government, for her musical legacy and for preserving the musical heritage of her home country. In 2004 Tatiana was the recipient of the Wammy (Washington Area Music Award) for World Music Vocalist, and in 2006 she received the Ivan Vasov Medal from the government of Bulgaria.
Since moving to the USA in 1991, Tatiana has coached many Balkan ensembles and is currently the artistic director of three choruses, two in the Boston area -- Divi Zheni and Zornitsa, and one in Washington DC -- Orfeia. In addition to coaching and directing singing groups and workshops, Tatiana has taught at the Boston Conservatory, the New England Conservatory, and Boston University, and has consulted for Revels, the renowned international music company. Tatiana commutes weekly between Washington DC and Boston, directing her ensembles, holding workshops, and giving private lessons in Balkan singing.
