"There's nothing to decode about the quality of Gabriel Tavares' new album "Cipher." The album is packed with poetic lyrics and a diverse range of musical instruments. From mbira to xylorimba, Tavares delivers his sincerely bold messages with the help of several talented musicians. "Whether it's the soft vocals of Uniit on tracks like "Loom" or Judy Hyman's soothing string arrangements on "Apple," "Cipher" is the kind of album that begs to be played on a sunny Ithaca day. "Tavares' personal and powerful lyrics of unification, dissolution, and childhood memories saturate the air with strong feeling. Although Tavares features many instruments, listeners should be sure to catch his renowned guitar work on songs like "Sleepwalk." "Sim Redmond, among others, makes an appearance on this solid solo album that proves Tavares is as a gifted guitarist on his own as in Plastic Nebraska."

Gabriel Tavares debut Album is FANTASTIC!
author: John Nolan from New York City
My girlfriend and I first heard Gabriel Tavares by "accident" when he followed a good friend of mine at a popular NYC East Village Music Venue (The Living Room). There was something about the way that he was "warming-up" before his set that made us want to hang out and catch his act and we are so happy that we did! Gabriel has one of the freshest sounds we have heard in a very long time. If you close your eyes, you just can't believe that he is a solo guitarist. There are times when it seems like there are as many as three guitarists playing at once - all in this amazing sychronization that is perfectly complemented by the tabla playing of his rythm support (I'm not 100% sure if Steven Curtis is the gentleman we heard play live, but if the person playing tabla on the album and the person who was supporting Garbriel on his NYC gig are two different people - then they are both AMAZING tabla players!) . His haunting voice and lyrics will imprint on your mind and you'll find your self humming for days. I can't say enough about him, you really need to hear his music. The CD is wonderful and will only fuel your need to hear him play live. Everyone who I have played his CD for has been very impressed and agree that he has a positive, "different", and very addictive sound. We wish Gabriel the best of success and hope he continues to make this wonderful creative music. Take a listen to this CD and I am sure it will be making itself at home in your CD carousel for a long time!
