Today’s music industry often relies on layers of digital sounds, complex samples and musical tricks which are then mixed to within an inch of their lives by highly trained technicians. An exception to this trend is recently discovered Californian musician/surfer Ted Lennon who by using only his voice, guitar and the simplest methods available has created some outstanding music. His newly released self titled C.D. was recorded on an old analogue four track recorder in his 1950’s home near Ventura where the Douglas fir floors, pine walls and redwood ceilings of the living room have given his recording a warm, stripped back, yet intimate sound. Ted is influenced and motivated by his local environment of mountains, coastline and the Pacific Ocean which gives his music a gentle and timeless quality. He surfs and does small shows with his friend, the well known singer, Jack Johnson who is quoted as saying "I’ve seen Ted play music in front of 1000 people and I’ve seen him play in front of five friends on the beach and the experience is always pure". Stand out tracks are the catchy love song Water And Bones, while the memorable I’m Selfish has a Nick Drake quality.
At the time of writing Ted’s C.D. are only available from his web site or out of the glove compartment of his trusty Volvo station wagon. Fans of Jack Johnson and Donavon Frankenreiter should log onto Ted’s web site and listen to, or buy his gentle and captivating sounds including his newly released E.P. called ‘Over Time’ on which he is backed by bass and drums.
