Is He Just Another Scarlotti Clone?
author: L. Wehner, Prof. Emeritus of the Humanities and Fine Arts, SSC,
Is Mr Tenebaum just an accomplished Scarlotti clone? Hardly! Nor would one claim that he is simply a cypher of the Master either. It is quite obvious from hearing these delightfully complex compositions that Mr Tenebaum has made a sensitive and academically profound study of Scarlotti's musical style and compositional structure. He also clearly has an insightful understanding and empathy with the characteristics of the Baroque muscial form. Yet his compositions rise above mere immitation and investigate the tradition within a completely contemporary temperment. There are also intimations of other influences, Bach and occasionally Mozart often resonate from within Mr. Tenebaum's original sonatas. Their flurish of inventive improvisation and stuning pianistic technique belie a very deep and often spiritual identification with the Master and his contemporaries. It takes alot of courage and conviction for a contemporary composer to consciously reject the trends of modernism in our present century and still remain surprisingly relevent. I believe Mr Tenenbaum has more than adaquetly achieved this remarkable task with consumit skill and creativity. Bravo! And I look forword to many pleasurable hours of future listening. Buy this album. I think you will not regret it. Thank you Mr Tenebaum!
