Album Notes

With her blend of Euro-influenced pop music and alternative rock, Valencia has created a blend of music with a hard sexy edge that is not over powering. With lyrics styled from her poetry, and based on her own childhood experiences, reflecting reality in America, its ups, and downs, the ever present search for love, and companionship that we have all experienced. She has created a blend of music that is socially relevant, sometimes troubling, but, always entertaining. In her own words “Soul Deliverance” “was a freeing of herself,” a catharsis. With her CD “Soul Deliverance”, we have an artist poised for great contributions and a bright future.

Valencia was born into a blue-collar family in Lingle, Wyoming. Her father John Valencia was a miner at the “Hartville Sunrise Mine” in Hartville, Wyoming, and an amateur musician. Her mother Lucinda was a divorced mother of three, working odd jobs, and bringing up her children Teresa, Barbara, and Lawrence. Teresa, influenced by her father started playing a recorder in second grade, following rapidly on her musical talent with the clarinet, tenor saxophone, and acoustical guitar. Growing up as the only latina, in an overtly racial environment, and her personal experiences in many failed relationships has greatly influenced her music. Teresa wants her music to be original, to reflect her life experiences, and her hopes for the future.

Valencia’s music is influenced by a broad mélange of musical traditions, classical music, Gregorian Chants and superstars such as Tina Turner, Roberta Flack, Al Greene, Smokey Robinson, Sarah MacLachlan, Annie Lennox, and Tory Amos. Teresa started her musical journey with a Christian Band, “Sacred Heart of Jesus Ministry”, performed clarinet solos in her high school Dixie Land Band and has performed live at gay pride demonstrations, and open mic nights at Night Clubs, and Coffee Houses. Teresa hooked up with Cleveland Wright III of the group “Temper” in February 2003, and arranger, producer, Christian Folmar in June 2003, with their guidance, and support she has seriously entertained a professional musical career.

Sexy!

OutMusic artist Teresa Valencia's debut album is soothing, redemptive, smoky and sultry all at once. She's an openly lesbian Black woman making beautiful music, so of couse, we love her! (Be sure to check out her smoldering track "One Try").
