Album Notes

"The Musician is Terran's third album, but strangely enough it has the innocence of a debut. The compositions are fluent and playful, both rough and soft. Terran produced and mixed everything herself, but has succeeded in preventing that the spontaneity of her music was killed by perfectionism. At some point Tori Amos had that same gift, but in the meantime she has become a phenomena… Let's hope that Jennifer Terran will never become world famous."

THE MUSICIAN - BY JENNIFER TERRAN
"The Musician is like a play within a play. It is a concept record, moving beyond the tradition of slapping a bunch of songs on a CD and calling it an album. It is comprised of music that belongs together, with a picture being painted, with a story being told. It's a multi-leveled entity to be uncovered and felt, with the use of time and reflection by you, the listener.

Those of you who are looking for instant food, just add water and go, Britney Spears whatever kind of music, I'm probably not for you. But who knows. I'll let you figure that one out. All I know is that my job is to dig down deep and put it out there, naked, real... no bullshit, just my honest truth and my total love, expressed to my best ability through the music.

For two years I stopped doing public performances and promotion. As an independent artist, I had gotten to the point where the job of getting the music out there was getting in the way of me creating and playing the music. So I decided to disappear from view, get back to what was real and put all my energy into making a recording that would really speak for me. And that is essentially what went down.

I spent two years reading technical manuals, asking a zillion stupid questions to everyone who seemed to know anything about recording engineering- and through much perseverance, I recorded, mixed and completed The Musician at home... in my own creative space... and on my own terms. Happily modern technology was making it possible for me to get better results sonicly than what I had captured in the finest recording studios paying top dollar. But most importantly by recording at home, I was able to express my own vision... my own painting, stroked and detailed by my own hand in a very personal way. And that is something that the best engineers and producers in the world couldn't have done for me.

The songs weren't played for anyone except for the musicians on the album as I was recording them. Whether good nor bad, I didn't want to be burdened or distracted by peoples' opinions. I just wanted The Musician to be pure and to simply present my own vision... so it made sense to rely on my own intuition to guide it.

Anyway, the journey of making the album was a very good one- sometimes paved with bliss and inspiration, sometimes paved with utter hell and sadness. And if I seem overly dramatic here, I'm sorry, but what can I say. I had never worked this hard for anything in my whole life! My drive and commitment to making this CD was ridiculous high. I suppose, because I knew I was getting down to what was really important to me in this world. And I knew I was engaged in something very special, if not for just myself, but for the people who could potentially understand.

But enough of that. The real point now is that The Musician is finished, to be praised or rejected, ignored or adored. It's out there. It's done. And I hope it reaches you."

2nd BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR
THE TIMES (London, UK)

"Breathtaking... timeless... pure... monumental.... Categorizing Jennifer Terran is impossible. Terran is a style of her own."
OOR MAGAZINE – (Netherlands)

"Haunting and intense, she sounds like a rawer version of Tori Amos. But Terran possesses a uniquely fierce and uncommon uncompromising voice"
UNCUT - (London, UK)

Top 10 CDs: “Terran is a breathtaking singer. Her vocal innuendos are pure, free of the mannerism of a lot of contemporary female colleagues."
FOCUS - (Belgium)

FOUR STARS!
ROLLING STONE - (Germany)

"Jennifer Terran is an unusual, very unusual kind of artist and quite a woman! A truly magnificent Film Noire Diva and a world-class songwriter-singer. This woman is unique, captivating vocalist, pianist, tenderly rebellious songwriter, producer by raison d'etre and necessity, hip-hop dynamic instructor and dancer, story-teller, an existentialist philosopher, an emotionally and intellectually charged teaser and provocative presence and most certainly a daring-devil entrepreneur."
HERALD TIMES PARADE – (London, UK)

"Not everybody can be both scary and vulnerable; Jennifer Terran (pronounced tearin') can. The scary part is her voice, which spirals into regions so high you fear she'll disappear or crash, and lately it has acquired a diamond-dust edge that can saw through a stack of hearts, first of all her own."
LA WEEKLY – (USA)

"If Jennifer Terran has a voice as much incomparable as unforgettable, it is because she is also that in real life. Her authentic and sensual voice awakes up in us emotions so deep inside that thinking of it makes nearly crying of pain or joy,
as if truth had a price."
MURMURES – (Switzerland)

The Magician!

Who the hell is Jennifer Terran? When an LP makes me wondering something like that, it means it goes beyond the edge of the of absolute best... I never buy an LP without ´digging´ about "The musician" :-). I bought this CD immediately after I previewed the FEW tracks a couple of times. Actually, I stumbled across "Live From Painted Cave", which "instantly" catched my ear! Usually I have a "dating" relationship with a musical work before I make the conclusion to buy it. Jennifer Terran’s "The Musician" is one of those LP’s that does not need dating... It’s LOVE at first sight! She’s unique, sensual, dramatic, emotional, and knows how to deliver a consistent high-standard originality that throws a few surprises in between! THIS is ART at it’s BEST, which leaves me completely amazed. Thanks Jennifer! (P.S.: I would love to get "Live from Painted Cave", but there is an annoying background noise that distracts me from the beautiful details of your voice. Are all pressings like that?? ALL the best! Marco).

Her best work
author: WoW
A friend of mine invited me to come along to a Jennifer Terran performance in Leiden (The Netherlands). We both had never heard of her, but the often made comparisons sparked our curiosity. Well, Jennifer proved all the critics wrong - she's unique! She played a wonderful set, and I immediately bought the album, which she kindly signed for me. Her music is very impressive, very diverse, and her lyrics very direct, which goes so well with her music. The opening song, "Liberty Lunch", is achingly beautiful, her voice delivering it with so much emotion. Other stand out tracks are "Santa's Secret", "This Recording", "Sticky Sweet 8 To 5 Lady" and "Sweet Love". I recommend this record to anyone who appreciates originality, female-voices and piano-based music.

The Musician: An Intimate Portrayal of One Woman's Plight
author: Jackie Daum
For those who define an album as "a set of independent, consecutive musical works separated by two seconds of silence", Jennifer Terran will shatter your paradigm. Terran's stream of consciousness approach to the recording of The Musician reflects her uncensored and unedited creativity. The Musician is an intimate portrayal of one woman's plight to make music without the backing of a major label record company. The songs themselves range in content from satirical to nostalgic, all delivered with raw emotional honesty. Reminiscent of the late Jeff Buckley, Terran's vocals are both subtle and provocative. Although a non-musician might be aliented by some of Terran's rantings on the music business or the home recording chain, anyone can relate to the Motown-esque "Sweet Love" or the song "Grand Canyon", which is speaks of trust and surrender (Grand Canyon/When I jump in/Commit my love in you/I can do anything). The Musician is a musical journey, full of twists and turns, and unexpected surprises. It is both pop and avante-garde, honest and sarcastic, intellectual and visceral. If you want to get out of the box, give Jennifer Terran a try.
