“Gettin’ out of town, driving in your car
Pulling off the road, stoppin’ at a bar
Yeah, we’re headin’ out tonight, the mirror compass reads N
And it feels so free to be this direction again”
The first verse from Troll for Trout’s anthem “Gettin’ Out of Town”, does much to capture the spirit of the band’s colorful 17 year history. Michael Crittenden, founding member and chief songwriter, sums it up. “Troll for Trout has always been about a lifestyle. It’s that excited feeling of leaving work early on a beautiful Friday afternoon and pointing your SUV North where there’s no schedule. It’s about camping, cottaging, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, cooking outside, cocktail hour with good friends, good conversation around a campfire, reading, and relaxing. It’s about finding and reconnecting with the peace that resides in all of us, but gets buried by the day to day grind.”
Troll for Trout, formed in 1993, spent their first 9 years building a loyal fan base by relentless touring of the Mid-West and East Coast. During that time, they released 4 full length CDs which were critically acclaimed and collectively sold over 25,000 copies. Trout’s songs, including Wishuwell, Sparkle, Riversong and The Canoe Song, have been heard on dozens of radio stations across the country as well as on MTV, ABC and PAXnet television. The band has shared the stage with the likes of Shawn Mullins, Hootie & the Blowfish, The Doobie Brothers, Peter Frampton, The Cars, George Thorogood, and Kenny Wayne Shepard among many others.
Since 2003, Troll for Trout has lightened their touring load, opting to spend more time with family. Crittenden has also transitioned into a role of producing and writing for many other artists at his Mackinaw Harvest Music Studios in Grand Rapids. The band, however, remains to be a passion for Crittenden and the boys and is still quite active performing regularly in Michigan with occasional out of state engagements. "We have a riot doing this and have no plans of slowing any further", says drummer Brian Morrill. In July 2010, “Troll for Trout - The First Fifteen” will be released. “15” is a full length anthology CD including 16 classic Trout tracks and 4 new songs. “We’re excited to get this CD out to our fans”, says Crittenden. “It’s a nice cross section of the last 15 years of Troll for Trout lifestyle. Look for Troll for Trout back on the road beginning April 2010.
