Album Notes

On February 19, Almost There Records will release Thank You Friends: An Almost There Records Salute To Big Star, 13 tracks of Memphis power meets Beatles pop goodness.

Highlights include:

Service Industry, “You Can't Have Me” – Stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll reminiscent of that first Izzy Stradlin & The JuJu Hounds album. Unfortunately, since only about 47 people get that reference, think Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers circa Hard Promises.

Grand Champeen, “Daisy Glaze “ – Perhaps the most representative Big Star song in that it demonstrates the pop as well as the power. Grand Champeen nails both the spacious, ethereal first half, as well as the rockin’, let’s-take-it-to-the-stage second half.

Youngmond Grand, “Jesus Christ” – This actually sounds like the band is covering “Holocaust,” but singing the words to “Jesus Christ.” Dirge-y, reverb-y, and impressive.

Mike Nicolai, “Nightime” – Nicolai has the uncanny ability to make every song sound like he wrote it, and this one is no exception. A quirky pop masterpiece.

Glossary, “Don't Lie To Me” – Glossary gets after this rocker like it owes them money. Seriously, I think the guitars are holding this tune for ransom.

The Archibalds, “O, Dana” – Bringing it all back home, with a laid back, front porch country take on one of Big Star’s more underrated pop songs.
