Album Notes

Tha Truth is a conscious/political underground hip hop artist and "rap-tivist" (rapper-activist) known around the Philadelphia area for battling inequality, poverty, discrimination, and injustice. He has performed in countless venues at concerts, colleges, demonstrations, conferences, and benefits. Since 2006 Tha Truth has released four underground political rap albums that attack the forces that maintain the status quo. About his music, Tha Truth says, "I make songs for the 99%. Lyrics for equality, human rights, and social justice."

In 2006 he released "Tha Civil Rights Movement," which was followed in 2007 by "Tha Civil Rights Movement Part II." 2008 saw the release of his "Tha People's Music" album. On “Tha People’s Music,” Tha Truth, inspired by Howard Zinn's famous book "A People's History of the US," detailed the real story behind U.S. history, starting with Columbus' theft of Native land in 1492. Tha People's Music also addressed poverty, immigrant rights, healthcare, war resistance, military recruitment, the prison system, the environment and many other political issues.

"Tha Mis-Education of the Masses" was released on May 19th (Malcolm X's birthday). Tha Truth chose this release date to honor freedom fighters Malcolm X and also Harvey Milk (whose birthday is May 22nd). This CD makes the same points as his previous projects, while adding sarcasm, humor, metaphors, diversified beats comprised from Middle Eastern live percussion/drums, native flutes, acoustic and rock guitars, reggaeton, and more DJ scratching and mixing.

The song "It's Like" is composed entirely of metaphors. Most of these 45 metaphors (technically similes) in the song have double meanings such as the line "A lot of people acting green like a grass hopper - but won't admit tanks ain't green - to be Frank like Sinatra," or "Greed should be locked up. It leaves a Pitt in my stomach like Angelina knocked up.” Another is aimed at the government’s handling of Hurricane Katrina as he raps “I resist Uncle Sam like Geronimo and his band – my theories hold water – unlike FEMA’s dams.”

The names of the songs on this CD make it clear that the album covers a wide range of political topics such as healthcare, immigration, bigotry, the environment, the educational system, apathy, poverty, and a lot more. “Tha Mis-Education of the Masses” album also features Tha Truth rapping in Spanish, at different speeds, and alongside collaborating artists like Ryan Harvey, T.O, and Optimus of Boston's Foundation Movement. On the song “The Struggle (La Lucha) Tha Truth summarizes his message, “There’s no argument that stands up against human decency – how can we have a world – where people are starvin- and obesity.” This CD comes in packaging made from recycled paper and a tray holding the CD in place made from 100% recycled bottles.

Tha Truth began writing rhymes in 1998 but it took the influence of a conscious rap artist he befriended to begin questioning his lyrics, which were more of the gangsta rap variety in the late 90's. As he grew, he learned there were answers to his questions about injustice in society, and he began to articulate political insight and struggle into his music. With each CD he aims to continually evolve with his insight, lyricism, and his overall musical production.

What People Need to Hear
author: Dan

I'm a fan of political hip hop. Tha Truth is one of my favorites because he actually raps about real issues and knows what’s going on. When I first heard of him, I checked out his music and then immediately bought all his albums. All four of them are great so I really can’t just pick one as my favorite. I’m hoping he puts out another CD soon!

Tha Truth is The Artist I've Been Waiting For
author: Rick T

This CD is sick. Every song is mad good and the lyrics are hard hitting. I love Tha Truth’s drive and what he is about. It's motivating. I wanna be a part of getting his voice out to the people so they can hear "Tha Truth" and everything people need to hear about life and the people around us. I always thought that we needed an artist that stood up to the usual music we hear and actually stood for something. Even though Tha Truth isn’t gay it is cool that he is down with it and for equality for all people. People need to hear this guy. Tha Truth is the artist I have been waiting for

I am Blown Away!

This CD has blown me away...and I'm not even a fan of hip hop (I'm a fan of combat folk and rock; yet, I evidently am being stretched by tha miseducation of the masses...granted I have appreciated Immortal Technique, as well). I appreciate the lyrics, the ideas behind them, the anti-capitalism, the critique of consumerism, the Chomsky, the shout outs to Zinn, and very clearly DR. KING. Tha Truth’s voice is needed, now more than ever. Until the end, I'm going to try to be a better "world citizen" - another great idea and lyric...

Epic, Legendary, Unparalleled … Tha Truth Reigns Supreme
author: T. Oscar

I am going to review this track by track. The intro beat is deadly, catches people on that subliminal tip like reverse psychology. Truth basically flips it on all those “thug wannabe” anthems and brings it right back to real consciousness. I love how Truth spits it in Spanish in La Lucha. I don’t know of a single MC that spits social truths as consistently as he does. This MC has truly earned his name. On It’s Like he drops so many similes it’s crazy, and I love M.K. Asante’s words. Freedom Fighters is on some crazy club vibes. I can imagine people in the club dancing like mad on this and still being influenced subconsciously by the lyrics. What Truth says is so concentrated, it’s crazy. What Cornell West said rings so deeply true too, it is truly unbelievable that they bail out corporations and bankers and never even gave one tenth of that to bail out the poor. On World without Borders, the beat is so beautiful. “I am every person that’s oppressed,” nearly every single line Truth spits is an instant quotable and classic. Mental Zombies, Noam Chomsky is crazy, one of my favorite intellectuals of all time, and the title of the track alone describes so well the state of this musical industry. Rage Against the System is like a calm storm, Truth drops massive amounts of facts so calmly. “When you’re always in beef and hustle for money all the time, in the street we call that running organized crime,” word to that, and everything else on this CD, for real. Truth with a Side of Humor, “Why don’t more psychics win the lottery?” lmao… that’s straight up!! “My grandfather hated my beard - I said it grows on you,” this is a funny ass track! The Obesity of Starvation, this is one of my favorite verses Truth ever spit. Tha Miseducation of the Masses, “From the Game to Lil Wayne, the whole mainstream is lame,” exactly my thoughts. “Dedication to meditation not medication is health,” I swear I could quote Tha Truth all day long, it’s ridiculous. In an industry where more than 90% of rap in an album is filler on average, Tha Truth reigns supreme. Evolution is one of my favorite beats, so laid back and harmonious. “Freestyle is not a freestyle,” so true. I crack a smile every 2 lines I listen to on this CD. I know I just said that about The Obesity of Starvation, but I think to date this is my favorite track on this album, no question. Money vs. Truth, so beautiful, another instant classic. I wanna requote everything in there but you already know… This whole album is like a rare precious gem, and this hook is insane. Crimes in Palestine, yes this subject needs to be spoken on over and over till the Truth shines through and things change. “History is His-story”… I said the exact same thing on my last album on a track about Native colonization. Medicare for All, I’m glad you took it back to that, not enough people speak on this subject. The type of militancy you represent honestly almost makes Dead Prez pale in comparison, and to me they’re one of the most conscious and militant group out there. “Si se puede!” Living with the Earth is a beautiful interlude. Seeing Through Illusions, I’m so proud to be on this track, on this album, and that that guy who wrote the review spoke about my verses amidst yours. Justice is so Boring, everything you flow is like an MA or a PhD thesis, so thorough and complete, so well-researched, it’s unparalleled. Rebel Music, even if I’m not a huge fan of the electric guitar in the beat, I love what is said. The hook is crazy, and OP from Foundation Movement is majestic, the essence of militance. The Function of Poverty, beautiful way to end the album. If I didn’t push myself to word my amazement I’d be speechless. Tha Truth literally blows my mind to epic proportions. I can’t express how incredible this album is to me. Tha Truth is the definition of what a living legend is, and every album he has done is irrefutable proof of this truth. Truth is without a doubt the greatest activist and rapper I’ve ever been blessed to know.
