notes
THE BIG IDEA is a project featuring songs written and recorded by Brad Ford and Dewayne Grissom. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered in Brad's studio - it features Brad on guitar, bass and synthesizers, and Dewayne on drums and vocals. The Big Idea also includes performances by several studio musicians. Billy Paul is the featured vocalist on four tracks and Gary Riley plays saxophone on seven of the album's cuts. Anna Jordan sings backups on two songs, and Kirk Palmer and Chris White play trumpet and trombone on one song. Triniti (Joyce Wilburn, Tamara Atterberry, and Jennie Gardner) contribute backing vocals on one tune.
THE BIG IDEA is energizing and engaging music. Each song on the album stands on its own merits - there are no filler tracks - and there are no traces of "assembly line" writing and editing. Brad and Dewayne drew on a large range of influences for the album's inspiration - The Big Idea covers a wide range of classic rock and R&B sounds with definite jazz, funk, and even gospel influences sprinkled in the mix.
The concept for THE BIG IDEA was to create and record songs that forged ahead with an original sound - yet all the while avoiding the all-to-often theme of "we've gotta be weird if we're gonna be different" syndrome. Brad and Dewayne wanted to defy convention and avoid being categorized or confined by any particular genre of music, but they wanted the music to be listenable and engaging. They did this by writing songs that tip the hat to a past filled with R&B and rock n' roll roots but still broke new ground - songs that are vaguely familiar but intriguingly new and different. This is certainly not the kind of mass produced stuff you often hear on the radio these days.
THE BIG IDEA was produced by guitarist Brad Ford, but it is NOT an album composed of self-indulgent guitar solos (although there's plenty of guitar on the album!) Instead, The Big Idea is supposed to be energetic, inspiring, and just plain FUN!
"After a brief guitar intro, The Big Idea bursts out of the shoot running wide open with the first cut 'She's A Mystery' and doesn't let up 'till the album ends. Guitarist Brad Ford plays some smokin' wah-wah guitar solos and veteran Billy Paul sings his heart out!"

author: Gina Rosset SmithThe Big Idea CD gets better the more one listens;well done jazzy tunes for a Sunday afternoon. The musicians have great talent in charming my senses!

author: Darrel ClarkI knew it would be good, but hearing "The Big Idea" all put together exceeded my expectations. The guitar work is amazing. Up to Steely Dan standards in taste, finesse and production--and I don't make that comparison lightly. In fact, I didn't think I would ever say such a thing. The drums, the brass, bass, vocals --it all sounds 1st rate. My compliments to the chef!
