When I wrote "Not Today," I was looking for something anthemic, with lots of attitude and cheek. My guitarist, Skot wanted actual three-part harmonies so he recruited the gifted and lovely Robin Nivans and Joe Jennings (JJ & The Real Jerks), and they laid down the third and the fifth for the choruses. Skot also recruited his daughter Emily and her friend to record vocals for the gang-chorus at the end, and you can hear them laughing and being silly after the guitars move in to the fade. Skot laid down the sick cry-baby style lead with a ton of peel and feedback for the solo, arranged the drums, played bass and did the final mix.
Everything in the song is true, or "mostly true," which is close enough for pop music. Call out well, and turn it the hell up!
