Lucky Dog

Well worth the price of admission, go get it!
I rarely do album reviews (who am I, right?) but if you are a fan of fun, classic, upbeat and sometimes moody, bluegrass roots-rock/Americana (hard to define!) music you must get a hold of the Courtney Janes new album, entitled "Long Season"... It is awesome! Dennis and Ben (usually a duo) created a beautiful album lending their usual mandolin, telecaster and acoustic melodies with drums and bass to create a newish Courtney "band sound", but the unexpected treat (besides great writing) is the addition of Eric Yates, adding clarinet to a fun and Jazzy "Two Steps in Tucson" and Accordion and Flute to tracks as well. Ben's "You" and "...Bloom of the Rose" brings self-respective storytelling to the forefront like a celebration, while Dennis takes an unusual and sobberish "Eddie Vetter" turn with a haunting "Long Season," which is a tight-rope sound journey between hope and regret... Yates again filling the void with a flute full of nostalgic wide open and frozen landscapes. On other songs, Ben and Dennis take advantage of their full band sound, such as their Del-Amitrish toe-tapper "Lifeline". Ben also leaves his Virginia Bluegrass roots behind with "The Spider"... Also a couple of unnecessary covers with Bruce's "I'm on Fire" and a Dylan turn... Both admirably done, but after such a terrific album, I want to hear more of the Janes originals....

Ben and Dennis grow with each song, leaving me awed and jealous... "You", "Long Season" and a snappy "...Tucson" are well worth the price of admission alone. Go get it!
