Cutpurse is the product of approximately two years of writing and playing songs together as a band. People always ask us what genre of music we play, but really it doesn't fit into one specific category. Our sound is very diverse, with a combination of unique styles, instruments, and influences from all types of music. We like to call it Gypsy Rock, mostly just because it sounds cool. If you can think of a good way to describe our music, please let us know!
This album was recorded in 5 days at the humble abode of RJ & Karen Dietrich, otherwise known as Blue Sofa Studios, located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. RJ & Karen comprise the indie acoustic band Essential Machine and they are totally awesome! Check them out.
This album is dedicated to the memory of Brendan Majewski, who passed away in January of 2011. Brendan, older brother of band member Brian, was a member of the bands Quix*o*tic and Orphan. Our song "You Live In Houses" particularly highlights our influence from these two groups. We also used images of young Brendan for the front cover of the album, conveying one of the albums prominent themes of "Light and Dark." The name Cutpurse likewise comes from a short-lived group Brendan formed.
