Nice Work
author: MusiqLover
No one can ever say that the Fuzz Band lacks the talent to make it in the music biz. Their musical prowess is unquestionable. "Without Boundaries," is a decent recording that highlites the skill of the musicians, vocalists and writers that compose this ensemble.
Although it has it's moments of greatness, "Without Boundaries," falls short on cohesion. The project comes across as more of a compilation by several different artists than a solid project by one band. Listening, one gets the impression that the band hasn't quite decided what direction it wants to follow; the result being a collection of songs that have no carry-over. In my opinion the work was just too broad - the Fuzz tried to be everything to everybody.
The songs, when examined individually, represent some of the best writing we've heard in years. The songs reach deep, and seem to be genuinely inspired - not just thrown together for the sake of a recording. The arrangements are tight, although they may prove a bit too mechanical for those who are not astute in the knowledge of music theory.
The record's high points come with K'Bana Blaq's "Surreal," and Nakia Madry's "Crossroads." These songs are captivating, and even though performed rarely, they are two of the most hard-hitting pieces in the Fuzz Band's book.
I can't say that this record is a classic. The Fuzz has a lot of growing up to do before it will be able to truly turn heads on a large scale. But, what this album does do is point to the possibilities that lay ahead for an extraordinary band of skilled musicians, singers and writers. The golden moments on "Without Boundaries," prove to us that when this band truly finds it's voice it will be nothing short of breathtaking. You definitely want this one in your collection - it is the starting point of something big.
