Album Notes

This documentary chronicles Seattle punk rock band The Gits and the life slain singer Mia Zapata. In the early nineties Seattle was ground zero for an important underground movement in rock and roll. The Gits were one of the bands that spearheaded the scene and became a much loved band within the community of punks, anarchists, drunks, dykes, artists freaks and outcasts.
Singer Mia Zapata\'s profound lyrics and songs were a contrast to the bands fierce, sometimes discordant, musical jabs and frantic tempos.
The band was being recognized worldwide and working on album #2 when Zapata was abducted, rapped and murdered blocks from her South Seattle home. No killer was apprehended and the case went unsolved for a decade. The community was devastated and the once vibrant music scene soon shriveled and died on the vine.
The band held a private investigation and a group formed to teach self defense to women.
A break in the case occurred while this documentary was being shot. A man was arrested and brought to trial while the cameras rolled. This is the story of The Gits, their community and how a band can mean more than a group of musicians. The Gits were a great band, a family and a relentless force that murder could not repress.

watching the documentary brought me back to the good and bad, like I had felt it all before, which I had. The film is sensitive to the band members and friends and family and of course Mia. The band seemed genuine albeit a bit apprehensive with the interviewers and who could blame them. All in all see the film. It\'s well worth it and it definitely pricks the emotions. How one person can affect so many is amazing.
