Album Notes

With the new release, "A Million Miles," The Harwell Grice Band demonstrates a strong confidence in its original songwriting, while continuing its tradition of tight harmonies and strong musicianship. The collection of 10 originals and 2 traditionals displays the depth of new, exciting material coming from the group out of Franklin County, VA. The album kicks off with the fiery "Daddy's Take Home Pay", paying homage to the way of life of moonshiners in rural Appalachia. "I'm Blue, I'm Lonesome" is a standout traditional, revealing the band's strong three part harmonies while finding the high, lonesome sound. The group also finds a mature, gentler sound with such prominent numbers as "Without You" and "Born to Love Her", combining sweet fiddle fills with wonderful harmonies. "Ange's Song" is an adventurous, original banjo composition, exploring the outter limits of traditional bluegrass while reaching to the edges of spacegrass. Other standouts include the emotionally gripping "Ashes to Ashes", a tragic story of lost love and the high price of addiction. "Highway of Dreams" is another thrilling original, inspired by the true story of Christopher McCandless from the story, "Into the Wild." The album closes with the toe tapping, barn burner "Crying Holy", a fun traditional gospel executed brilliantly by the quintet. The Harwell Grice Band draws from a plethora of influences for its original sound, while always keeping the traditional sound close to the heart. From top to bottom, "A Million Miles" is an electrifying album that confirms the future of bluegrass is in good hands and that The Harwell Grice Band is a force to be reckoned with.

This is a good one

This is a great effort from a group that successfully straddles the line between traditional and progressive bluegrass. Great original songwriting, tear-it-up instrumental chops and tight three-part harmonies are all on display here, but the sound is distinctive and thoroughly modern. Good job boys, way to bring the music forward while staying true to the source.
