Album Notes

"This collaboration of local musicians is a lush and wonderful piece of music from a bygone era. Mixing pop sounds and '60s tone, musicians Giovanni Morant, Jay Miley, Doug and Derrick Horres capture Derrick's dream to make this happen, and now the world has the opportunity to take a listen."

Michael E. Saliba/CHARLESTON CITY PAPER

"The Humbles CD, Firewall, is available at all Cat's Music stores and is one of the finest recordings I've ever heard from a local band. The songs are well written, positive and exquisitely arranged. Jay Miley's engineering is as pro as you'll find in any big city. And the individual talents are perfect for each other. If you are a fan of local music, and you want to get your hands on an excellent local recording , pick up Firewall and listen to it on the headphones. This band may not be a bar band, but you'll be just as appreciative of the project as I am."

Eddie Hogan/CHARLESTON'S FREE TIME

"about the music: The war I wage through my music is the war against loneliness, despair and doubt and against the forces of darkness which are all around us. May we always have love in our hearts and hope for the future, for love and hope protect us like a FIREWALL against these and other dangers."

the humbles

the humbles story: Officially, it all began on November 11, 2000. That's when I received the courage and confidence I needed to record my own music. I had been in other bands, but it was always covers or music written by someone else. This time I had something to say, and I was going to say it through my music. I had been working on a solo album off and on for about two years. There were twelve songs, most of which were finished with the different parts being worked-out on my TASCAM 4-Track MiniStudio. I took a cassette of the music to my friend, Jay Miley, owner of Charleston Recording Studios. We listened to the songs one by one. The "music" with me playing all the parts and with me singing was humble, very humble (hence the name the humbles). I kept the cassette. Like a before and after shot, I always wanted to remember how I sounded, and why I started this project. My next task was to recruit a band.

Jay agreed to play all the guitar parts, and with my brother Doug on bass, we started recording on December 15, 2000. Doug has that creative spark I needed if this project was going to be any good. The three of us had never played or practiced together before. The guitar chords and words were written down for Jay and Doug to follow but that was it. We recorded all the drum and bass tracks first, then Jay added all the guitar parts. Next we brought in a friend of Doug, named Giovanni Morant, to sing all the vocal parts. Giovanni put his heart and soul into the project, a true professional, a musician's musician. He gave me what I was looking for in the vocals - passion. Giovanni knocked-out the vocals in a week and we were ready to mix and master. The whole process had gone remarkably smooth and on April 4, 2001 we were done! It had taken less than four months working one or two nights a week and an occasional weekend to complete the project (a total of 85 studio hours). We decided to name the CD FIREWALL after the song.

All of us became very close while working on this project to the point we really started to feel like a band. So, with our CD in the stores and available on CDBABY.COM, the humbles are prepared to promote their music. At this stage we have all agreed to take it just one step at a time.
