notes

1968 - Winners and Losers on the Mainstream label. Small, independent, quirky Mainstream Records was a vinyl lightning rod for truly electric talent.

Janis Joplin was the great white blues singer propelling the "Big Brother & the Holding Company" recording to success.

Ted Nugent was the wildman guitarist taking the Amboy Dukes on a "Journey To The Center Of The Mind." And The Jelly Bean Bandits released their debut LP.

Janis and Ted sold millions, the Bandits didn't.

2001 - An Odyssey of Sorts. Thirty-three years later, Janis is dead, Ted is still Ted, and the original Jelly Bean Bandits album is now Goldmine Magazine collectible rated at $150 in good condition.

The Bandits find that they've been written up on websites from England to New Zealand, they've been written about in books like "Fuzz, Acid and Flowers", they've been bootlegged in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and even exotic San Diego.

Their first album turns up regularly on e-Bay. So what's a late-blooming bunch of middleaged rockers to do when semi-cult status sneaks in their backdoor? They get back together and put out a second recording, of course.

Time and Again. The problem the Bandits had with their first recording was that every song was different. The record label didn't know how to market them. Billboard, Cashbox and Record World, the music biz mags of the day, didn't know how to classify them. Record stores didn't even know what bin to put them in.

Thirty-three years later the Bandits haven't changed their music approach. Nine brand-new songs with great lyrics, merciless hook lines and separate identities. Plus five Bonus Collector Tracks from 1967-69 for the diehard fan and collector.

"Time and Again" is the name of the new Jelly Bean Bandits CD. It merits an honest listen.

the title track on this cd could, and should, be a top 10 hit today. These guys after all these years are still hitting the nail on the head.
