Album Notes

Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) was an exceptional performer and composer and a unique artist in the jazz scene: his style was already evident in early work with the Cootie Williams Orchestra ("'Round midnight" later became a standard) and as a pianist with Coleman Hawkins. Monk did some recordings in the late 1940s and also some work with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, but his most prolific period was after 1955 (the following year he started playing with a quartet that included John Coltrane).
Monk spent amore than 15 years recording and performing and after joining the Giants of Jazz group in 1971, retired permanently in 1973.
