Beautiful, blissful pop music - featuring members of Elliott Smith's band and Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks.
I've been hearing about these guys forever, and this CD certainly delivered. Swirly keyboards, perfectly placed jangly guitars and lots of interesting and intricate songwriting qualities. Super-duper smart-pop with hooks aplenty.

Like a number of current groups the Maroons mine a pure strain of guitar-band vocal pop with a long and honorable tradition. They do it much better than most. The vocal delivery and occasional Baroque touches on tracks like "Limbo" and "Blindfold Follies" recall, among others, such classy antecedents as Stories, Michael Brown's post-Left Banke group. But this poised, light structure is charged with a propulsive guitar sound on the likes of "Kevin's" and the bracing "9 1/2", and there's a genuine urgency whenever it's called for. So despite the delicacy, the moments of exquisite falsetto, the harpsichord-like keyboards.. this ain't no whimpy stuff, it's interesting and expressive in ways that stand up to much repeated playing. Few bands can pull off the yearning of "Can You Feel" without succumbing to sentimentality.. with the Maroons that's not even an issue.. they don't make this sort of music as a style move but because they love it and they know it deserves their best. They're up to it.
