The Quinn Hedges Band - Step Outside
Quinn Hedges has been making music since he was fifteen. After several years of school, he recorded his debut album in 2006. Since then, he has worked on many original songs with leanings toward jazz, folk and blues. The Quinn Hedges Band currently consists of Quinn Hedges (guitar, mandolin, vocals), John Yessen (drums) and Jamison Aguirre (bass). Step Outside is the band’s 2012 release.
At the onset of “Chemistry” the first thing you notice is the guitar picking and folksy feel to the piece. The soft masculine vocals are warm and inviting, with jarring periods of guitar riffs that capture interest and hold you with the song. Evenly paced, the song is indeed a perfect chemistry between jazz, folk and blues.
“Searching My Soul” is the most intricate and interesting piece on the album. The vocals are textured and wind around to embrace the blues and folk feel to the piece. Warm vocals lure you in and the wispiness of the guitar floats over you, cheerful and lighthearted. The theme of the song delves into a soul searching endeavor, but the music behind the words gives it a much lighter feel. Hedges takes you on a journey of sorts and images of loneliness and trying to make the right choices pervade.
“With You There” is the last track on the album. Tentative plucking gives rise to themes of romance and hope for the future. The percussion weaves around the tender guitar playing and marries well with the soft vocals. The electric guitar pops about a third of the way into the song and adds life to the piece. Rife with storytelling, Hedges crafts an even tone with a relaxing harmony.
The Quinn Hedges Band maintains a busy touring schedule. Grasping the feel of blues, jazz and folk music, every song on the album has a story to tell, interwoven with emotion. Step Outside is a capable album rich with harmony and layers of guitar, bass, vocals, and percussion that make it a great sound to listen to after a hectic day in the world.
