English singer/song-writer Theresa Rhodes’ music has been compared to Chrissie Hynde’s (Pretenders), Sharleen Spitery’s (Texas), Nathalie Merchant’s or Jonatha Brooke’s, all very prestigious references.
Her atmospheric lyrics draw inspiration from Apollinaire to Zimmerman via Jack Kerouac. Her songs are crafted from an equally-diverse palette of moods and rhythms, alternating between country, rock, swing, and blues.
Melodies are key to all of her compositions which her magical voice interprets with sensuality, melancholy or tongue-in-cheek. As a result, all of Theresa Rhodes’ albums have a magnetic appeal and an addictive quality.
Entitled simply "If You Had Only", Theresa Rhodes' latest album is a new departure for this talented artist, with an international line up of fantastic musicians including the renowned Cameroon drummer Felix Sabal Lecco (Paul Simon, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Prince, Sade), Scotsman Neil Gerstenberg on sax and low whistles (David Sanborn, Jean-Marc Jafet, Warren Vaché, Jean-Marc Jafet, Sylvain Luc), French guitarist Eric Sempé (John McLaughlin, Liz McComb, Chris de Burgh, David Sanborn) and Marc Peillon on electric bass (Stephano Di Battista, Gloria Gaynor, Chris de Burgh, David Sanborn, Babik Reinhardt).

Great band, strong lyrics, fine arrangements...
author: Al Green
I bought this CD having seen the band play the Spirit of 66 club in Belgium last year. This is a fine album of songs written in the true singer/songwriter tradition: words and music with meaning. Theresa gave a fine live performance at the club last year, and this album captures her voice to perfection (I'd like to know where you did the mix!). As for the band, they are clearly talented and versatile, with influences ranging from Reggae to Jazz via Ska... the choice of instrumentation reflects this eclectic approach with inspired improvisations on soprano saxophone and violin set against a backdrop of serious Africain groove by Felix Sabal-lecco (correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure I saw him live with Peter Gabriel?) and driving guitar and bass. Come back to Belgium soon!
